Five people, including a woman were arrested today in the UK by police over suspicion on fundraising for terrorism and in Syria-related counterterrorism investigations.

Police said four people have been arrested in a Syria-related counterterrorism investigation. Two Sheffield men, aged 40 and 36, are being questioned at a police station in West Yorkshire.

In addition, a 55-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man from Batley were arrested over suspected terrorist fundraising.

In a separate development, a 23-year-old man was arrested under the Terrorism Act in east London by Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command.

Five properties in Sheffield, Batley and Dewsbury are also being searched.

The North East Counter Terrorism Unit said the investigation over the Yorkshire arrests was Syria related.

The two men from Sheffield have been arrested on suspicion of an offence under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act - preparation to commit an act of terrorism.

The other two have been arrested on suspicion of terrorist fundraising.

Detective Chief Superintendent, head of the North East Counter Terrorism Unit, said: "We understand that people may be concerned following today's arrests however we would like to reassure communities that today's activity is as a result of an ongoing investigation which is intelligence led.

"There is no evidence to suggest that communities are at risk," Wain said.
