The Squadron, which comprises military transport aircraft, has had the distinction of spearheading the largest-ever formation in the history of the IAF during the Tangail Operations in the 1971 war.

In December 2004, when Tsunami caused havoc in the Andaman Nicobar Islands, the Squadron flew extensive sorties to carry out relief operations.

Formed in 1963 in Guwahati, the Squadron flew out Lt. General A K Niazi, commander of the defeated Pakistani forces from Dhaka to Kolkata. It also flew Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, first President of independent Bangladesh to Dhaka, after the cessation of hostilities.

Former Congress leader Rajesh Pilot has also been a part of this squardon before he resigned and joined politics.

The award of President's Standard is one of the highest honours bestowed upon an IAF unit or squadron in recognition of exceptional service rendered by it to the nation, both during war and in peace.
