The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has underscored the need for organic farming in the entire North East.
"We should resort to organic farming to revive and improve soil health and for the ultimate good health of the consumers," ICAR Director S V Ngachan said.
He was speaking at the closing function of a seven-day training on 'Organic Farming for Sustainable Hill Agriculture' at the ICAR complex near here yesterday.
Ngachan said there is a need to push for organic farming in the entire NE considering the topography of the region.
ATARI Director Dr A K Tripathi laid emphasis on strengthening collaboration among institutes to mobilise resources to spread organic farming technologies for the ultimate benefit of the farmers in the region.
Apart from 20 scientists of ICAR Complex and the Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), 30 participants for the training from the KVKs and other Institutes in the region attended.
The week long training, which started from September 17 and concluded yesterday, imparted hands-on experience in organic farming with the emphasis on its implications in farming practice.
The major topics dealt during sessions included soil management, crop nutrition, manure management, crop rotation, recycling of nutrient and energy through integrated farming system, weed management and pest and disease management, according to the statement released by the institute.
