Jail break bid by correctional home inmates foiled in Birbhum

A jail break attempt by some prisoners was foiled at Suri District Correctional Home today in Birbhum district, a senior jail official said.

As the gate of a cell was opened by a security guard, today, the prisoners inside tried to break past the cordon, the official said.

They were pushed into the cell again and the gate locked but the Welfare Officer of the correctional home Subhajit Mukherjee and a constable suffered injuries in the resultant scuffle.

"The DIG [Prison] has visited the correctional home and started an investigation," District Magistrate P Mohangandhi said.

"The district administration is concerned about the incident," he added without elaborating about the incident.
