A case has been registered against a man for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in Punjab's Phagwara city, police said today.

Baljinder Singh, a resident of village Rehana Jattan, was booked on the complaint of a woman who alleged that he groped her, investigating officer Kabul Singh said.

The complainant told police that she is part of a group of eight women who exchange loans on a weekly basis.

A few days ago, the group went to the house of one of its members who had defaulted on loan repayment, Priya, to collect the money, the complaint said.

The complainant went inside Priya's house but found that she was not at home. So she asked Priya's husband, Baljinder, to pay the money, the police said, adding that the accused then groped her.

Baljinder has been booked under section 354 (assault or criminal force against woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC.
