A man died and another was injured after a shell exploded near them at the Long Proof Range (LPR) of the Ordnance Factory Itarsi (OFI) near here, police said.
Sunderlal Loube (34) and Suresh Korku (32) were collecting the used (fired) shells when the incident took place, said assistant sub-inspector Surendra Kumar Shukla.
While Sunderlal died on the spot, Suresh was hospitalised and was in a serious condition.
"We have registered a case and further investigation is on," the ASI added.
According to the police, people illegally enter the LPR area to collect the fired shells which are sold to scrap metal dealers.
