A 65-year-old Nepalese security guard was beaten to death and his nephew injured when they tried to stop four masked burglars from trying to rob a shop in central Delhi's Paharganj area last night.

Bhagat Shah and his nephew Karan Bahadur, hailing from Nepal's Virat Nagar area, and who worked as guards in Nehru Market area, the tobacco wholesale market, were patrolling around 1.20 am when they heard sounds of shutter being struck with iron rods.

When they rushed to the spot, they saw two masked men trying to break open a shutter of a shop. When they challenged the robbers, they were attacked with rods, police said, adding that the robbers were joined by two of their accomplices who were waiting nearby in a car.

After Shah collapsed on the ground after he was fatally hit on the head and Karan too neutralised, the attackers fled in their car.

Someone saw the two lying in a pool of blood and informed the police.

The duo was then rushed to a nearby hospital where Shah was declared brought dead while Bahadur is undergoing treatment and his condition is said to be out of danger.

"We have registered a case of murder and attempt to murder on Bahadur's statement," a police official said.

The burglars could not be immediately identified as they wore masks. CCTV footage of the area is being scanned to establish their identity and efforts are on to nab them, police said.
