Scores of auto and taxi drivers today took out a protest march against the newly-introduced 'City Taxi' scheme by the Delhi government under which small cars will be allowed to ply on the city's roads.
The protest march, organised by Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh and Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union, was carried out from Samta Sthal to Power House near Delhi Secretariat.
Drivers of taxi and auto drivers participated in the protest with their vehicles against the 'City Taxi' scheme.
"The new scheme will snatch the livelihood of auto and taxi drivers. Government should scrap the City Taxi scheme. We will not sit silent till our demand is met," Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh's general secretary Rajendra Soni said.
Soni, who is also secretary of Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union, said they wanted to carry out their protest march till Delhi Secretariat, but police did not allow to do so.
"We cannot compromise with the livelihood of drivers and if there is any need in future, we will launch a series of protests," Soni said.
After the protest, representatives of the both unions handed over memorandum relating to their demands to transport minister Gopal Rai.
According to the 'City Taxi' scheme, vehicles having capacity of 600 cc onwards can register with the government. Until now, only those vehicles which had capacity of 750 cc or more were issued permits.
