SAD-BJP regime demolished health sector: Pb minister

Press Trust of India Chandigarh
Punjab Health minister Brahm Mohindra today hit out at the previous SAD-BJP regime, accusing it of "demolishing" the health sector in the state.

The minister claimed that the Parkash Singh Badal government had "never bothered" to hire staff and provide the required infrastructure in government hospitals.

Answering a query posed by an Akali MLA in the state Assembly, the health minister referred to the SAD-BJP, which ruled Punjab earlier, and said that they should have left some money in the state coffers for bringing improvements in the healthcare sector.

Akali MLA Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra in his question had asked whether there was any proposal to upgrade the community health centre at Dudhan Sadhan in Patiala.

"They (previous SAD-BJP government) did not do anything for the healthcare sector. They demolished the health sector," the minister alleged.

They made only hospital buildings but never bothered to appoint doctors, and necessary infrastructure like x-ray machines for the treatment of patients, Mohindra said.

When an Akali member accused him of diverting from the issue, Mohindra retorted by saying that it should be considered whether the previous government had left money for spending.

Earlier, to a query on old age pensions, state minister Razia Sultana said an inquiry has been ordered to probe whether pension benefits were given to ineligible beneficiaries in Zira constituency.
