Former Himachal Pradesh top cop Sanjay Kumar today took over as the chief of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Kumar, a 1985-batch Indian Police Service officer, was accorded a Guard of Honour before he took charge at the force's headquarters here.
The Union Home Ministry had on July 4 issued an order appointing Kumar to the top NDRF post.
The post of NDRF Director General had fallen vacant after R K Pachnanda was appointed as the chief of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Sino-Indian border guarding force.
Kumar, who is set to retire in December next year, was serving as the Director General of Police of Himachal Pradesh.
He has been succeeded by 1984-batch IPS officer Somesh Goyal as the HP DGP.
Kumar has also served with the CISF, the vigilance wing of the Railway Ministry and the Railway Protection Force.
The NDRF, raised in 2006, has 12 battalions comprising over 13,000 personnel.
The force is mandated to undertake special disaster response and combat roles independently. It also helps local authorities launch a quick rescue and response operation to save life and property.
