The Supreme Court today refused to interfere with an order of Allahabad High Court making it mandatory for a habitual woman petitioner to deposit a bank draft of Rs 25,000 for filing in future any public interest litigation petitions.

A bench headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha said the high court order should not be seen as a deterrent but motivation for Lucknow-based Nutan Thakur for filing genuine petitions in public interest.

The bench did not agree with her counsel that such an order was coming in the way of a citizen to approach the court without any hassle.

Thakur had challenged the April 11 order of the Lucknow bench of the high court which while dismissing her PIL had mandated that she should in future deposit a bank draft of Rs 25,000 before filing any PIL.
