Seeking to tackle the menace of streets dogs in the city, SDMC has decided to enhance capacity of its sterilisation centres from 21,000 to 35,000 canines per year.
The Supreme Court had yesterday asked the states and the civic bodies to take steps to sterilise and vaccinate nuisance-causing stray dogs under the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Referring to the apex court's directions, a senior South Delhi Municipal Corporation official said, "There would be no dearth of funds in containing menace of stray dogs, and we will comply with the instructions issued by the court in this regard."

The centres at Bijwasan, Mundala, Nangli and Masoodpur will each have a capacity to sterilise 100 dogs per day. Besides, commissioning of another centre at Dwarka Sector 9 having a capacity of 200 dogs per day will also be expedited, the official said.
"With the operationalisation of these centres, the existing sterilisation capacity of 21,000 dogs per annum will go up to 35,000 dogs," he said.
As per reports, 2,695 cases of dog-bite occurred during June-December last year.
The official said SDMC has increased its budget for dog sterilisation from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10.40 crore. A sum of Rs 2.10 crore has also been provided to purchase vans to catch stray dogs.
