The fire at an ONGC well near Olpad in Surat district was brought under control this evening, twelve days after it started, officials said.
The efforts are now underway to control the gas leak.
"The fire has been brought under control by our team. Now they are trying to stop the leakage of gas from the well," said an ONGC official.
The fire broke out at OLPAD-31 well in Ankleshwar basin on April 18 when a blow-out preventer (BOP) was being repaired. As an ONGC team was working to stop a leakage, a spark resulted in a huge blast and the gas coming out of the well caught fire.
At least 12 persons, including employees hired by contractors, sustained burn injuries. One of them, a crane operator namely Sitaram, died during the treatment in Mumbai.
To control the fire and the gas leakage, ONGC has called in experts from US-based oil and gas blow-out control firm Boots & Coots, who are working along with ONGC's own crisis management team.
