The police at Jamnagar in Gujarat today arrested a 16-year-old youth after an SUV (sport utility vehicle) driven by him allegedly knocked down an elderly woman, resulting in her death.

The hit-and-run incident had taken place on Sharu Section road in the city yesterday.

The minor son of a shipping contractor was allegedly behind the wheel of Audi Q3 which hit the woman, police said.

The driver fled from the spot with the car without bothering to help the woman, said inspector Samir Sarada of C-division police station.

"Kumudben Solanki, who was badly injured, was taken to city civil hospital where she died this afternoon," he said.

"The youth, son of a shipping contractor from the city, was driving at a very high speed when it hit Solanki who was crossing the road with her husband. The youth escaped and drove home. We seized the car today and arrested him," inspector Sarada said.

A case under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code was registered.

The accused was also booked under sections 134 (not securing medical attention for the injured), 181 (driving without licence) and 184 (driving at high speed) of Motor Vehicles Act, Sarada said.
