Manifesto Promises in Budget

The newly appointed first ever full-time woman finance minister of the country, Nirmala Sitharaman, will present the Union Budget on July 5. This will be the first Budget of the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in its second term. In the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP manifesto had made several promises, some of which are expected to be taken up in Budget 2019.

Agriculture and farm distress were among the most important issues during the elections, and the BJP had made some promises to address the prevailing issues. For instance, interest-free short-term crop loans for farmers and storage and marketing infra for farm and aqua food produce were part of the BJP manifesto.

Similarly, the party promised a modern law for conclusive land titling and accident insurance for traders registered under GST. Also, a merchant credit card for traders was promised. Would the new government be able to provide for these? Traders will keep an eye out.

Climate change is also real and a big concern. Water scarcity is becoming a major trouble for citizens. The ruling party had promised piped water to all citizens by 2024. Will we see a move in that direction?

Will Nirmala Sitharaman make Budgetary provisions for these and other important promises in Budget 2019? We will know on July 5.
