Namtech Electronic Devices Ltd. (NAMTECHELE) - Company History

Namtech Electronic Devices (NED) promoted by K P P Nambiar who has more than 35 years of experience in the electronics industry, having its factory in Electronic City, in Bangalore and it manufactures gas discharge (GD) tubes with technical and financial collaboration (equity stake: 10%) from Citel, France. It came out with a public issue in Jan.'92 to finance the setting up of a plant (cap. : 8 mln GD tubes pa). NED started commercial production of GD tubes in Jan.'93. On implementing phase II of the production programme in Jun.'93, it achieved an indigenisation level of 35% through the production of basic parts. Phase III (production from the raw material level) commenced in Sep.'93, taking the indigenous content to 65%. NED is the only manufacturer of failsafe gas discharge (GD) tubes in India. GD tubes are used as surge arrestors to protect telephone exchange equipment, computer systems, signalling systems, defence telecom networks, overhead telephone lines and various sophisticated consumer electronic devices. GD tubes act as protection devices against surge or over-voltage due to lightning strikes, sudden fluctuation in industrial loads, etc. In Sep.'94, the company entered into a technology transfer agreement for seven types of ceramic GD tubes with Suntech Company, Japan, to meet the growing demand for such devices in the new state-of-the-art electronic exchanges. Production commenced in Sep.'95. Thus, NED will be the first in India to manufacture both glass-metal and ceramic gas discharge tubes. During 1997-98, the company received ISO 9002 certification. During the year 1999-2000, the company achieved a milestone with successful inhouse development of a superior and cost effective version of the single phase enegry meter as compared to the ASIC based version maufactured and supplied during the previous year. The company is planning to enter areas of traffic light and automobile lighting for which a potential market exists in the country.During the year 2000-2001 the company has launched red & yellow colour lamps and these traffic lights are in commercial production by other private sector units based on supply of lamps from the company. The company has achieved a break-through during the year 2001-02 in the export market by executing its first export order for tri-polar and bi-polar GD Tubes.
