The BJP has won big in the municipal elections in Haryana, results of which are being declared on Wednesday. The party’s candidates secured victory in seven municipal corporations and were leading in two others.

The Congress, which was hoping to bounce back after losing the 2024 Assembly elections, faced another setback.
The elections took place on March 2 in seven cities including Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad, Hisar, Rohtak, Karnal, and Yamunanagar. Additionally, bypolls were held for the mayoral seats in Ambala and Sonipat, along with elections in 21 municipal committees. Panipat's elections were held later on March 9.

According to the results, BJP won in Ambala, Faridabad, Gurugram, Hisar, Karnal, Rohtak, and Sonipat. The party was also leading in Yamunanagar and Panipat. However, in Manesar, independent candidate Inderjeet Yadav defeated BJP’s Sunder Lal by 2,293 votes.

In the last municipal term, BJP had mayors in eight out of ten civic bodies. Some previous mayors, like Sonipat’s Nikhil Madaan and Ambala’s Shakti Rani Sharma, had switched to BJP before the Assembly polls and won seats.

Among the major wins, BJP’s Parveen Joshi from Faridabad secured victory by over 3 lakh votes, while Raj Rani from Gurugram won by 1.79 lakh votes. Other winners included senior BJP leader Rajiv Jain (Sonipat) and Renu Bala Gupta (Karnal).
The Haryana State Election Commission ensured smooth counting of votes with the help of district officials.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini had earlier expressed confidence in BJP’s victory. He said development work in Haryana would speed up under a “triple-engine” government, with BJP in power at the Centre, the state, and local bodies.
