The 2025 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences has been awarded to Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion, and Peter Howitt for their pioneering research on innovation-driven economic growth, the Nobel Committee announced on Monday.

Mokyr, of Northwestern University, received half the prize for his work identifying the conditions necessary for sustained economic growth through technological advancement. The remaining half was jointly awarded to Aghion, of Collège de France, and Howitt, of Brown University, for developing the theory of sustained growth driven by creative destruction, the committee said.
Hamas on Monday released all 20 remaining living hostages held in Gaza as part of a ceasefire that has paused two years of conflict which devastated the territory, claimed tens of thousands of Palestinian lives, and left many captives in militant custody.

Seven of the hostages were freed early Monday, followed by the release of the remaining 13 a few hours later.

Israeli authorities said the 20 men were being reunited with their families and would undergo medical examinations.

Bodies of 28 hostages expected to be returned

Under the agreement, the bodies of 28 deceased hostages are also expected to be handed over, though the timing of the transfer has not yet been confirmed.

In Tel Aviv, families and supporters gathered at Hostage Square erupted in celebration as Israeli television channels reported that the first group of freed hostages had been received by the Red Cross. Tens of thousands of Israelis watched the transfer live on public screens across the country.

Israel releases first images of returning hostages

Israel later released the first photographs of hostages returning home, including one showing 28-year-old twins Gali and Ziv Berman embracing as they were reunited. Hostages freed earlier this year had said the twins from Kfar Aza had been held separately.

Images of the seven hostages released on Monday showed them appearing pale but in relatively better condition than some who were freed in January.

Meanwhile, Palestinians awaited the release of hundreds of prisoners held by Israel under the same ceasefire arrangement.

Retail inflation in Sep slips to 1.54%, says govt data

Retail inflation slipped to 1.54 per cent in September from 2.07 per cent in the preceding month mainly due to subdued prices of food items, including vegetables and pulses, according to government data released on Monday. The consumer price index (CPI) based inflation was 5.49 per cent in September 2024. "The decline in headline inflation and food inflation during September 2025 is mainly attributed to favourable base effect and decline in inflation of vegetables, oil and fats, fruits, pulses and products, cereal and products, egg, fuel and light," the National Statistics Office (NSO) said.
