At least 38 people died in a stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur on Saturday, with the toll feared to rise.
Several people fainted during the rush at the venue and were immediately taken to nearby hospitals in ambulances.Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin expressed concern over the incident and held an emergency meeting following the incident.
Many who swooned during the event were rushed to hospitals in ambulances. Vijay himself was seen offering water bottles to those who had fainted before resuming his speech.
“The news from Karur is worrying. I have contacted former Minister @V_Senthilbalaji, Health Minister @Subramanian_Ma and the District Collector to provide immediate support to the civilians who fainted due to the crowd and have been admitted to the hospital,” Stalin said in a post on X.

The Chief Minister directed School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, from the neighbouring Tiruchirappalli district, to provide urgent assistance to the injured.
“I have also spoken to the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order, Davidson Devasirvatham) there to take steps to improve the situation as soon as possible. I request the public to cooperate with the doctors and the police,” Stalin added. PM Modi says the incident is deeply saddening "The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured," Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X.

"Tragic stampede incident at Karur rally The stampede at the rally led by actor, TVK @TVKVijayHQ party president Shri Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu state, is tragic. I am shocked to learn that, according to preliminary information, 33 people have died in this accident. The fact that six children are among the deceased is heartbreaking. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. I urge the Tamil Nadu government to provide better medical care to the injured," said Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party Leader Pawan Kalyan in a statement.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah says deeply pained
"Deeply pained by the tragic loss of lives in a stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. I pray to the Almighty to give them the strength to bear this grief and for the speedy recovery of the injured," writes Union Home Minister Amit Shah on X.
