The Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has released provisional payroll data for January 2025, revealing a net addition of 17.89 lakh members. An increase of 11.48 per cent has been registered in net payroll addition during the current month as compared to the previous month of December 2024. Further, the year-on-year analysis reveals a growth of 11.67 per cent in net payroll additions compared to January 2024, signifying increased employment opportunities and heightened awareness of employee benefits, bolstered by EPFO's effective outreach initiatives.

The Nifty opened above 23,000 and extended its gains, crossing 23,200 intraday before settling above the 23,190 mark. Volatility was observed during trading due to the weekly options expiry on the NSE. All sectoral indices on the NSE closed positively, with the energy, auto, and FMCG sectors leading the gains.

Euro slipped to a one-week low against the dollar on Thursday after European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde warned that a full-scale trade war with the United States could significantly harm the euro zone economy and potentially lead to a surge in inflation. ECB analysis suggests that a US tariff of 25% on imports from Europe would lower euro area growth by about 0.3 percentage points in the first year, she stated. A European response in the form of raising tariffs on US imports would further increase this to about half a percentage point. The brunt of the impact on economic growth would concentrate around the first year after the rise in tariffs; it would then diminish over time, however leaving a persistent negative effect on the level of output, she said. However, ECB analysis indicates that closer integration with the rest of the world could more than offset losses incurred from unilateral tariffs, including retaliation, she noted.
