India logs 1,226 cases of JN.1 sub-variant, highest from K'taka, Andhra

A total of 1,226 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been reported in the country so far with Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh recording the highest number of cases till now, according to INSACOG on Thursday. Data compiled by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) showed that 17 states and UTs have detected the presence of the variant. Karnataka has detected 234 cases of JN.1 sub-variant followed by Andhra Pradesh (189), Maharashtra (170), Kerala (156), West Bengal (96), Goa (90), Tamil Nadu (88) and Gujarat (76). Rajasthan recorded 37 JN.1 cases, Telangana 32, Chhattisgarh 25, Delhi 16, Uttar Pradesh 7, Haryana five, Odisha three, and Uttarakhand and Nagaland one each, according to the data accessed by PTI. The Congress on Tuesday appointed Y S Sharmila, the daughter of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, as the new president of the party's Andhra Pradesh unit. Y S Sharmila joins Congress, calls it largest secular party in India

Y S Sharmila, the daughter of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and founder of YSR Telangana Party, joined the Congress here on Thursday. She also announced the merger of her YSR Telangana Congress with the Congress, and said she would fulfil any responsibility given to her. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) institute in Andhra Pradesh's Sri Satyasai district on Tuesday afternoon and also visit the famous Lepakshi temple on Tuesday. Congress files case against Andhra Deputy CM Swamy over derogatory remarks

A case was registered against Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Narayana Swamy following a complaint by a Telangana Congress leader that he made derogatory comments against party leader Sonia Gandhi, police said on Saturday. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee senior vice president Mallu Ravi complained to police over Swamy's alleged comments linking Sonia Gandhi and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu for the death of former CM of undivided Andhra Pradesh Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. Rajasekhara Reddy died in a chopper crash in 2009. The complainant alleged, among others, that Swamy spread false information. The case was registered at Begumbazar police station in the city under section 505 IPC (statements conducing to public mischief), police said.

Andhra CM Reddy disburses Rs 431 crore under Jagananna Thodu scheme

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday disbursed Rs 431 crore under the Jagananna Thodu scheme, which provides nearly four lakh small and marginal street vendors and artisans with interest-free bank loans of up to Rs 10,000. Thursday's transfer of funds was the eighth such disbursal, and also includes interest subvention of Rs 14 crore, which benefited up to six lakh beneficiaries who availed loans and repaid them on time. The state government decided to implement the 'Jagananna Thodu' scheme after coming to know the financial difficulties of petty traders, Reddy said, addressing the beneficiaries and officials virtually from his camp office. LS polls: CEC, ECs to visit Andhra Pradesh Monday to review preparations

The chief election commissioner and the two election commissioners will visit Andhra Pradesh on Monday to conduct a review of the state's preparedness for the Lok Sabha polls, due in April-May, officials said. The assembly elections in the state are likely to be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls. Actor-politician and Janasena party founder Pawan Kalyan on Saturday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging massive corruption by the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy-led Andhra Pradesh government under the guise of distributing land and constructing houses for the poor. Kalyan has alleged that a massive Rs 35,141 crore has been misappropriated with regard to land acquisition alone. "The swindling in the name of land acquisition has been so high that a ruling party legislator himself sought an inquiry by the state vigilance and enforcement department," the Janasena chief said in the letter. Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu joins ruling YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh

Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu on Thursday joined the ruling YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh. He was inducted into the party in the presence of Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister K Narayana Swamy and Rajampeta Lok Sabha member P Mithun Reddy. ECI reviews poll preparedness in AP, stresses on error-free electoral rolls

A team of Election Commission officers on Saturday reviewed the preparedness for next year's general elections and directed officials to ensure that the electoral rolls are free of any errors and maintain transparency while conducting polls. The ECI team led by Senior Deputy Election Commissioners Dharmendra Sharma and Nitish Kumar Vyas issued these directives to officials of Nandyala, Anantapur, Sri Satyasai, NTR, Annamayya, Chittoor and Tirupati districts during a two-day review meeting that ended on Saturday. The Election Commission officers told the district officials to be ready to conduct elections without errors or any scope for any untoward incidents and stressed maintaining transparency and accountability, an official release said. They noted that maintaining error-free electoral rolls is the key to holding elections peacefully. The EC officials directed the collectors and superintendents of police to properly train the election officials.
