Biplab Kumar Deb

Biplab Kumar Deb is the present and 10th Chief Minister of Tripura. He has been State president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2016. Tripura's first BJP chief minister owes his rise to several mentors in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of which he has been a member since the early nineties. The Congress, which hitherto used to be the main challenger to the Left Front in the state, lost ground and could not get even a single Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) elected to the 60-member House in the February 2018 polls.

After taking charge, Deb was in the news for a host of controversial remarks. He made several comments that triggered widespread criticism - on Internet and satellite communication in the Mahabharata era; he said civil, and not mechanical, engineers should opt for the civil services; educated youths should set up paan shops instead of seeking government jobs; and youngsters should explore a career in the dairy field and raise cows.

Under Deb, BJP broke a 25-year winning streak of the Left Front in Tripura in 2018. While serving as an RSS volunteer in New Delhi in 2016, he was chosen to be the Tripura chief of the BJP.

His slogan -- Chalo Paltai (let’s flip it) -- helped the BJP garner votes and dethrone the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the state. After Assam, Manipur and Mizoram, he was the fourth BJP leader to be appointed as CM in a Northeast state since 2014. In the 2019  Lok Sabha Elections, it would be interesting to see how he holds fort in the state and whether the BJP can put up a good show.
