Coal import by NRS, domestic thermal power plants drops 9.8% in H1FY25

Coal import by non-regulated sectors (NRS) dropped 9.83 per cent to 63.28 million tonnes (MT) in the April-September period of the ongoing financial year, the government on Wednesday said. The coal import by NRS was 70.18 MT in year-ago period. The coal import by domestic thermal power plants for blending purpose also declined 8.59 per cent to 9.79 MT in the April-September period from 10.71 MT a year ago. "This demonstrates an increased reliance on domestic coal supplies for these sectors," the coal ministry said in a statement. However, there has been a rise in the import of coking coal, essential for the steel industry, and coal for imported coal-based (ICB) power plants, which are not substitutable by domestic coal. The overall coal imports during April-September 2024 rose 1.36 per cent to 129.52 million tonnes (MT) compared to 127.78 MT in the corresponding period of the previous year. Coal imports rise marginally by 0.9% to 90.51 MT in Apr-Jul of FY25

There is a "critical need" for coal imports, and the country has reported a marginal rise of 0.9 per cent to 90.51 mt in the April-July period of FY25, according to an official statement. India, which has the fifth-largest coal reserves in the world, is also its second-largest consumer, driven by a rapidly growing economy, Ministry of Coal said on Wednesday. Coal production during the April-July FY25 period increased 9.56 per cent to 321.40 MT from 293.35 MT in FY24. "However, the current consumption landscape reveals a critical need for imports, particularly for coking coal and high-grade thermal coal, which are not sufficiently available within domestic reserves. This shortfall necessitates imports to support key industries, including steel," it said. India should reduce coal imports, says G Kishan Reddy after taking charge

G Kishan Reddy on Thursday took charge as coal and mines minister and said that India should increase domestic production of the fossil-fuel and reduce coal imports. Domestic coal import rises 13% in Feb to 21.64 MT ahead of summer

India's coal import rose by 13 per cent to 21.64 million tonnes (MT) in February as some buyers took fresh positions to replenish stocks ahead of summer, according to online marketplace mjunction. The country's coal import was 19.15 MT in the corresponding month of FY23. "Coal imports in February 2024 were up by 13 per cent as against 19.15 MT in February 2023," as per the data compiled by mjunction. Of the total import in February, non-coking coal import increased to 13.77 MT compared to 11.68 MT imported in the year-ago period. "Coking coal volume was 4.56 MT, against 4.40 MT imported in February 2023," it said. The country registered a marginal rise of 1.65 per cent in coal imports to 212.24 Million Tonnes (MT) in the April-January period of the ongoing fiscal, over the year-ago period. India's coal import registered a rise of 27.2 per cent to 23.35 Million Tonne (MT) in December, over the corresponding month of the previous fiscal. The coal ministry is aiming for zero thermal coal import by FY26. India's coal imports up 11.7% to 21 MT in Nov, demand likely to be subdued

The country registered an 11.7 per cent rise in coal imports to 20.95 Million Tonnes (MT) in November as compared to the year-ago period. The country's coal imports in November 2022 was 18.75 MT, according to data compiled by B2B e-commerce company mjunction services. However, coal import in the April-November period of the current financial year dropped to 169.08 MT from 173.47 MT in the year-ago period. There was reduction in coal imports due to ample domestic supply and a slowdown in demand after the festive season in October, mjunction MD and CEO Vinaya Varma said. The demand for imported coal, he said, is likely to remain subdued in the coming months. Coal imports fall 1.82% to 68.30 MT in Apr-Jun quarter: mjunction

India's total coal imports fell 1.82 per cent to 68.30 million tonne in April-June period of ongoing financial year, according to a report. The import was at 69.57 MT in the same period a year ago, mjunction said in its latest report. The import included non-coking coal, coking coal, anthracite coal, pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal, met coke and pet coke, it said. During the period, non-coking coal import stood at 42.99 MT against 47.44 MT in the same period last year, while coking coal import was 15.89 MT against 14.61 MT imported a year ago. India starts safeguard probe against sudden, sharp jump in met coke imports

India has started a safeguard probe into sudden and sharp increase in the imports of metallurgical coke, used as fuel in steel and chemicals plants, following a complaint by domestic industries that the inbound shipments are impacting them. In an application to the commerce ministry's arm Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), BLA Pvt Ltd, Jindal Coke Ltd, Saurashtra Fuels, Vedanta Malco Energy and Visa Coke Ltd have alleged that there has been sudden, sharp, significant and recent increase in the imports of low ash metallurgical coke in India, which is adversely impacting the industry. To guard the industry from these imports, the applicants have requested imposition of safeguard measures in the form of quantitative restrictions on the imports.
