Toll rises to 38 in UP dust storm

The toll from a dust storm that hit parts of Uttar Pradesh has risen to 38, officials said today. Six people were killed in Kasganj, the worst affected district in the state, an Uttar Pradesh government official said. "Thirty-eight people were killed and 50 injured in the dust storm that lashed various parts of Uttar Pradesh on May 13-14," the official said. Five people each were killed in Bareilly and Barabanki districts. Officials said 117 houses were damaged and 13 animals died in the storms.

2 killed in dust storm in UP's Muzaffarnagar, Shamli

At least two people, including a woman, were killed and several injured in a dust storm that hit Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts in western Uttar Pradesh last evening, officials said. Riyasat Ali (52) was killed and his son seriously injured after a tree fell on them near Pawti village, Muzaffarnagar district administration officials said today. In Shamli district's Jalalabad area, 50-year-old Anwari Begum died after a portion of her house's wall collapsed during the dust storm, officials said. Over 12 people were injured in both districts and electricity supply was disrupted because of the storm, according to Muzaffarnagar and Shamli district administration officials.

3 RJD leaders returning from Tej Pratap's wedding die in accident

Three Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders were among the four killed in a road accident in Bihar's Araria district.According to police, they were returning from the wedding of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's eldest son, Tej Pratap Yadav.The police said their car was going to Kishanganj from Patna when the driver lost the control and broke through the road divider and collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction in Simraha police station area on Sunday morning.The deceased have been identified as Ikramul Haq Baghi, the party activist and son of former state minister Islamuddin; RJD Kishanganj district president Intekhab Alam; Dighalganj block president Pappu; and driver Sahil.

100 houses gutted in fire sparked by lightning

About 100 houses were gutted in a fire which broke out due to lightning in Sambhal district's Rajpura area late Sunday night.Three fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the fire, according to official sources.No reports of causalities or injuries have been reported so far.More details are awaited.

Truck hits parking facility of car showroom

A truck carrying chemicals hit the parking facility of a car showroom after colliding with another truck on the Ring Road, police said today. After being hit by the truck, the driver of the truck carrying chemicals from Alwar to Bawana lost control over his vehicle and crossed the footpath. The truck rammed into the parking facility of a Mercedes showroom, they added. The guard on duty fractured his hand. The fire brigade was called on the spot and chemical was cleaned, they added.

Dust storm affects rail services in Delhi, adjacent areas

Dust storms and thunderstorms, which swept across parts of northern India, affected rail services with the Nizamuddin-Palwal section being the worst hit as trees fell on railway tracks and overhead electrical equipment got damaged. A number of trains were stranded, including the Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, which was held up at the Sonepat station. Several goods trains were also stranded, even as operations on other routes remained normal, a railway spokesperson said. A platform of the Faridabad station suffered structural damage due to the high-velocity winds, and train on the Nizamuddin-Palwal section were running slow till the time of filing this report. However, services on the vital Delhi-Howrah section remained normal and the premier Rajdhani trains left New Delhi just on time as the dust storm was beginning to hit the city, sources said. Reports of tree falling on the railway tracks were received from Moradabad and Lucknow divisions as well.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in storms that hit parts of the country this evening. He said he has asked officials to provide all possible assistance to those affected. "Saddened by the loss of lives due to storms in some parts of the country. Condolences to the bereaved families. Thunderstorm in Uttar Pradesh kills 18 people

At least 18 people were killed and 28 injured in hail and thunderstorm that hit different parts of Uttar Pradesh today, officials said. Five deaths have been reported from Kasganj, three from Bulandshahr and two each from Ghaziabad and Saharanpur. Apart from this, one death each has been reported from Etawah, Aligarh, Kannauj, Hapur, Noida and Sambhal, Principal Secretary (Information) Awanish Awasthi said. 12 killed in lightning strike in West Bengal

At least 12 people, including four children, were killed and over 15 injured in different districts of West Bengal, after lightning struck them amid heavy rains today, an official of the state disaster management department said. Five deaths were reported from Howrah district's Uluberia sub-division, while there were two deaths each in Paschim Midnapore, North 24 Parganas and Nadia districts, and one in Murshidabad district, he said. A person in Howrah district suffered serious injuries and was undergoing treatment at a local hospital, the official said. Two persons died and 18 others were injured in Delhi when a squall and powerful dust storm barrelled through the national capital today, police said. A 56-year-old woman died after a branch of a tree fell on her in east Delhi's Pandav Nagar area, they said. Police said Somvati Sinha was out for an evening walk when the mishap happened. She had suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. During the walk, Sinha was accompanied by her neighbours, who miraculously escaped, police said. Coast Guard ship Vikram arrives in Mangalaru

: Coast guard vessel Vikram, the first in the class of seven new-generation offshore patrol vessels under the union government's 'Make in India' initiative, arrived at its base port here today. The ship is 98 metres long, 15 metres wide and can move in a range of 5,000 nautical miles and can attain a sustained speed of upto 26 knots, a press release said. The ship is built with an integrated platform management system to enable special control capabilities, it said. It has been fitted with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment, sensors and machines, it said, adding that Vikram also features 30-mm gun and a 12.7-mm gun. The ship is also designed to carry a twin-engine light and heavy helicopters, as also a pollution response equipment to contain oil-spill in sea.
