The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) will start admission process for 2019-20 academic session from March 14 and four new programmes will be started. The university will start the admission process for Ph.D/ MPhil, postgraduate, undergraduate and diploma/certificate programmes (except BTech and B.Arch). Online admission forms and e-prospectus shall be available from March 14 to April 12, the varsity said in an official release issued here. Three new programmes in self-financing mode are being started by the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management. These are MBA (Tourism and Travel), Master of Hotel Management (MHM) and Diploma in Food and Beverages Services, it said. A new programme -- MBA (Entrepreneurship & Family Business) in self-financing mode -- is also being started in the Centre for Management Studies (CMS), the release added.
Different teachers' organisations of Jadavpur University observed a three-hour ceasework on Wednesday demanding pay revision and scrapping of "anti-people" education policies by the Centre and West Bengal government. No classes were held in the afternoon hours as the ceasework was held from 2 pm to 5 pm, a spokesman of Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) said. He said 270 teachers, belonging to JUTA, West Bengal College and University Teachers' Association and All Bengal University Teachers' Association (ABUTA) joined the ceasework and took part in a sit-in . The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union has called for a strike on Thursday to condemn the "anti-student" prospectus released by the varsity, which is beginning its admission process for 2019-20 academic session from March 15. The vice-chancellor of the university unilaterally increased the prospectus fees by 300 per cent, closed down BA lateral entry programme in School of Languages, and de-linked MPhil-PhD programme which was an integrated programme, the students' union claimed on Wednesday. JNUSU members alleged that there has been a 300 per cent hike in the price of prospectus -- Rs 3,600 for the general category, Rs 2,700 for the OBC category and Rs 1,800 for SC and ST categories, and others. They have called for a university strike on Thursday and will be burning an effigy of Vice-Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar. The members have warned the vice-chancellor to hold back the "anti-student" prospectus or else they will be forced to take matters into their hands.
In a first, the Jawaharlal Nehru University will be conducting its entrance exams online this year, which will be held in May and the registration process will start on March 15, officials said Wednesday. The entrance exams will comprise of multiple choice questions (MCQs), they said. The online registration process for JNU Entrance Examination, 2019-20 will begin online from March 15 and Natioinal Testing Agency or NTA will upload the e-prospectus. The registration process will close on April 15, while students will have the option of correcting their application forms from April 17 to April 19, university officials said. The admit cards will be available for download from the NTA website from April 22 while the entrance exam will be held from May 27 to May 30, they said. Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui told the Assembly on Wednesday that there are many schools in the state where there are only two or four students. While the teacher-pupil ratio is 1:30, Rymbui said there are many Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) schools which are functioning with two teachers teaching only two or four students. "We are in the process to rationalise teachers placement in SSA schools so that resources of the government is not wasted," he said. At least 50 people were charged in the scheme, which included not only cheating on the admissions tests but also bribing coaches to gain admission for students into elite schools. Malaysia has closed 34 schools after hundreds of people fell ill when toxic waste was dumped into a river, the education minister said Wednesday, warning the situation was getting worse. A lorry is believed to have dumped the waste in southern Johor state last week, sending toxic fumes across a wide area and causing those affected to display symptoms of poisoning such as nausea and vomiting. About 300 people, many of them children, received medical treatment after inhaling the fumes and scores have been admitted to hospital, according to official news agency Bernama. Reports said it was unclear what type of poisonous gas had been emitted near the industrial town of Pasir Gudang. At least 26 teachers from Palghar district in Maharashtra have been booked for allegedly refusing to do election-related duty, police said Wednesday. The teachers from a school in Nallasopara area were last year appointed as booth-level officers to update the voters' list and undertake other poll-related works, Palghar police spokesperson Hemant Kumar Katkar said. They were supposed to carry out the works between June 2018 and February this year, he said. However, since the 26 teachers did not turn up for the work, an electoral registration officer in-charge of the area complained to police, he said. Based on the complaint, the teachers were on Tuesday booked under Section 32(1) (breach of official duty in connection with preparation of electoral rolls) of the Representation of People Act, Katkar said.

The examination committee of the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) Tuesday could not take a "final" decision about the fate of 108 students, whose Mathematics answer sheets went missing during the just-concluded matriculation examination in Odisha. The committee also failed to take a call on another 500 students, whose English paper was cancelled after a large number of students of at least three schools in Cuttack, Dhenkanal and Balangir districts were found to have adopted unfair practices during the matriculation (class 10) examination. "Although, the members of the examination committee discussed at length about certain other aspects of the Matriculation examination, they could not arrive at a final decision on the fate of the 108 students, whose answer sheets are still untraceable", BSE secretary Ramshis Hazra said.
