The Maharashtra State Commission for Women on Thursday issued a notice to Marathi poet Dinkar Manwar over a poem which has drawn criticism from certain quarters for 'insulting' tribal women. The poem is part of "Drushya Naslelya Drushyat" (In A Scene Which Can't Be Seen), Manwar's debut collection of poems which was included in the syllabus of Mumbai University. The poem uses the imagery of 'breasts of tribal girl' at one place while talking about ever-changing colours of water. "Acting on the complaints, the commission has issued a notice to the poet and has asked him to appear on October 20," said a statement issued by the commission here. The book has been recommended to students under the Union government's Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan scheme. Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan said the reference to Sambhaji in the book was objectionable, and the book should be withdrawn. The government should "apologise to the people of Maharashtra" for recommending such a book, Chavan said. NCP leader ...
The Madhya Pradesh High Court Thursday directed the state government to frame a policy to fill up vacant posts of teachers in government schools in a phased manner. A division bench of Chief Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Vijay Kumar Shukla asked the government to complete the process within five years after framing the policy. The policy should be uploaded on the government's website within four months of Thursday's order, the court said. The court observed that due to shortage of regular teachers, 70,000 'guest teachers' had to be hired this year. "The engagement of large number of guest teachers cannot be a rule and the state government will be well advised to fill the posts of teachers in the schools in a phased manner in the years to come," the judges said. The directions came on petitions filed by guest teachers hired for the academic year 2017-18. These teachers had moved the court against certain aspects of hiring of guest teachers for the academic year 2018-19.

During the proceedings of the Standing Committee of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), the AAP and the Congress also demanded "stricter action" against the accused in-charge, saying "his mere suspension was not enough". "Action should be taken against other senior officials, too, who could be involved in it. It is a shocking case that goes against the harmonious culture of India, as we know it," AAP leader Vikas Goel said. "A mere school in-charge could not have possibly done this act without connivance of other senior officials. Also, I suspect the RSS' involvement in it, since elections are due next year," he alleged. The head of the school in Wazirabad was suspended Wednesday for "segregating ...
