The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved establishment and operationalisation of two new permanent campuses of the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Tirupati and Behrampur. "The construction of the two campuses shall be completed by December, 2021. The total cost likely to be incurred is Rs 3074.12 crore," an official statement said. "The creation of two posts of Registrar, one in each IISER, has also been approved. Both the IISERs will be constructed in area of 1,17,000 sqm which will have complete infrastructural facilities for 1,855 students each," it added. The IISERs will provide top quality science education at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, PHDs and Integrated PHDs. "They will carry out research in frontier areas of science and will enable India move towards a knowledge economy by attracting best scientific talent as faculty and prepare a strong base of scientific manpower in India," the statement said.

Cross FIRs were lodged following a scuffle between a group of lawyers and AIIMS students at the hospital campus over playing in the premises, police said Tuesday. The incident took place on October 2, they said. In their complaint, the MBBS students alleged that the lawyers gained "unauthorised" entry into the playground area of the restricted hostel premises and forced the students playing there to vacate the ground for them. This resulted in a confrontation between the AIIMS students and the lawyers, police said. They said nine MBBS students were injured in the scuffle. A lawyer in his complaint alleged that he along with his four friends were abused and thrashed by the MBBS students with iron-rods when they tried to play in the basketball area in the AIIMS campus. Afraid that she may be forced to drop out of school for scoring less in exams, a class 9 student left home Tuesday but did not reach her school, following which the family approached the police who traced her within a few hours. The girl, a student of a Delhi government school, is a resident of west Delhi's Punjabi Bagh and was traced in about three hours after the police were informed, police said. Footages of multiple cameras installed on the route between her house and the school, located a few kilometres away in the same area, were scanned, a senior police officer said. A students' collective will on Wednesday hold an agitation at the Arts Faculty of the Delhi University to press for their demands including curfew-less nights for women. The call by Pinjra Tod comes after the group held an all-night protest in the University on Monday and even blocked traffic on the Mall Road as their talks with the proctor and deputy proctor of DU did not yield results. Last week, the organisation had submitted a charter of demands to the Vice-Chancellor of the University demanding removal of curfew timings and allowing 24-hour entry into women's hostels, abolishing the concept of local guardians for students and keeping a provision for an emergency local contact. The student's collective further demanded a new women's hostel for differently-abled students and the setting up of an internal complaint committee against sexual harassment in all colleges and institutions. In a new report by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights in collaboration with Quality Council of India (QCI), the child rights body said the aim of the study was to understand the implementation of provision of free and compulsory education for out-of school children provided under the Right To Education Act. The Delhi government Tuesday approved concessional passes for students commuting in air-conditioned and cluster scheme buses, an official statement said. The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, it said. "The student passes would be issued to all beneficiaries institutions in accordance with the said regulation. The reimbursement of subsidy to the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will be done as per the prevailing pattern," it said. The passes will be available for bona fide students of educational institutions in Delhi, recognised by the universities, as well as those schools and institutions affiliated to the Delhi government, central government and the municipal corporations.
