SFI members lathicharged while protesting fee hike

Around 150 students were lathicharged when they attempted to picket the state-run Manonmaniam Sundaranar University here protesting hike in examination fee Tuesday, police said. The protesters, members of the Left wing Students Federation of India (SFI), were protesting the recent increase in the examination fee for undergraduate students from Rs 100 per paper to Rs 400. Though officials drew their attention to the university lowering the fee to Rs 200 per paper Monday, the students continued their protest and blocked the main gate of the campus demanding further reduction. As the situation turned tense, lathicharge was made to disperse them, police said. Several students suffered bruises in the lathicharge. The student also demanded they should be allowed to write their examination in Tamil though the medium might be English.

Arunachal to get new RK Mission school, agriculture college

Arunachal Pradesh is set to get its third Ramakrishna Mission school with Chief Minister Pema Khandu laying the foundation stone Tuesday at Lumdung in East Kameng district. Khandu also said the state's second agriculture college would come up in the district, an official release said. "The two institutes will not only benefit East Kameng district but all the neighbouring districts," he said, adding, they would also boost tourism and economic activities. The chief minister appealed to all the MLAs of East Kameng, West Kameng and Tawang districts to contribute towards the development of the school, from their local area development fund. The Ramakrishna Mission has made tremendous contribution towards development of human resource in the state, the CM said.

J C Bose Vice Chancellor gets 3 years' extension

Prof Dinesh Kumar, the Vice Chancellor of J C Bose (erstwhile YMCA) University of Science and Technology, Faridabad, was on Tuesday given an extension of three years with effect from November 4 this year, an official spokesman said here. The extension was approved by Haryana Governor and the university Chancellor Satyadeo Narain Arya on the recommendation of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The notification to this effect has also been issued, the spokesman said. Prof Kumar, who had received prestigious Homi Bhabha Memorial Award from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for contribution to the development of science and technology in the country, has been granted this extension on the basis of the achievements made by the university during his tenure, the spokesman said. Sharda University violence: Afghans among 8 students found guilty

The Sharda University in Greater Noida has found eight students guilty of involvement in the violence that erupted on its campus last week between groups of Indian and Afghan students, and asked them to explain why they should not be expelled, officials said. A three-member inquiry committee was constituted by the varsity on October 4 to look into the incidents of scuffle on the campus between October 1 and 4, a university spokesperson said Tuesday. The inquiry report was submitted to the university authorities late on Monday evening, days after Gautam Buddh Nagar administration suspected the role of anti-social elements from outside in escalating "a minor scuffle into a communal issue". Magisterial probe ordered into 'ban' on signing Vande Matram in state-aided college: Ballia DM

A magisterial probe has been ordered into the alleged ban on singing Vande Matram and chanting "Bharat Mata ki Jai" in a government-aided inter college here, Ballia District Magistrate Bhawani Singh Khangaraut said Tuesday. Khangaraut said he and Superintendent of Police Sriparna Ganguly visited Gandhi Mohammad Ali Memorial (GMAM) Inter College Tuesday to examine the allegation and later ordered a magisterial probe. During the probe, statements of students, teachers and others would be recorded, the district magistrate said, adding the college principal was also asked to clarify that there is no ban on chanting 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and Vande Matram. An FIR was lodged Monday by a class 12 student, Anuj Kumar Gaur that he and three other school students were attacked at the college gate in the afternoon while they were going out. IIT Madras sign MoU with TN e-Governance agency

Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency here, to enhance data driven governence in education, health care and agriculture sectors. Kolkata: Teacher nabbed for sexually assaulting minor girl

A male teacher of a school situated in South Kolkata has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl.This comes after scores of agitated parents and locals protested outside the school gates on Tuesday morning and even attempted to enter the institution's premises. However, security personnel and school staff blocked the entry into the school.As the protest intensified a scuffle broke out between the agitators and police deployed outside the school. Six-year old molested in Kolkata school, angry parents stage

A six-year-old girl student was allegedly molested by a male teacher at a school in south Kolkata which triggered protests by angry parents in front of the institution, police said. Ananya Chakrabarty, Chairperson of the West Bengal Child Rights Commission, said that the student had been molested by the male teacher. The accused teacher was taken to a police station and investigation was on, police said. The police had a tough time to control the protestors who tried to enter the school. Brickbats were hurled at the police personnel in which some of them were injured, the sources said. The police had to weild batons to disperse the demonstrators. Deputy Commissioner of Police(South East division) Kalyan Mukherjee said, "The teacher was taken to the police station. Investigation is on". Parents stage demonstration to protest against alleged

Parents of students in a south Kolkata school Tuesday protested before the institution alleging that a minor girl was molested by a male teacher, police said. The police had a tough time to control the angry parents who tried to enter the school. The police had to wield batons to disperse the demonstrators. Deputy Commissioner of Police(South East division) Kalyan Mukherjee said, "We are trying to talk to the guardians and handle the situation." Indian-American NGO receives grant to help at-risk high school students improve grades

Prominent Indian-American NGO SEWA International USA has received a grant of USD 15,000 to help at-risk high school students improve their grades in science, math and english. This is the third consecutive year that Eaton Charitable Fund has awarded the grant of USD 15,000 to support Sewa International's ASPIRE (Active Student Participation Inspires Real Engagement) Tutorial and Mentoring Program in Cleveland. Sewa International has one of the lowest overhead expenses of a charitable organisation in the country as its leadership takes no salary, and most of the work is done by volunteers, Rogerio Branco, executive vice president at Eaton, said. A women's collective on Monday began an all-night protest at Delhi University's Arts Faculty demanding curfew-less nights for women's hostels. A group of Jamia Millia Islamia students called off their hunger strike on Monday after the administration gave them written assurance to meet their demands of appointing Turkish teachers and shifting language programme to MMAJ Academy of International Studies.
