Indonesia has over 50 million students and 2.6 million teachers in more than 250,000 schools. IAF veteran donates Rs 17 lk to school where his wife taught for 21 yrs

A retried Air Force officer has donated Rs 17 lakh to a school where his wife taught for more than two decades, the Defence Ministry said in a statement Wednesday. Wing Commander (retd) JP Baduni lost his wife Vidhu Baduni due to a cardiac arrest in February this year. Vidhu Baduni was a teacher in the Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute at Subroto Park in Delhi for a period of 21 Years. "In her memory, her husband Wg Cdr (Retd) JP Baduni donated a sum of Rs 17 lakhto the school she had served," the statement said. Poonam S Rampal, principal of theAir Force Golden Jubilee Institute, said part of the donation, Rs 10 lakh, would be used for awarding scholarships and prizes to students of classes V to XI, achieving meritorious excellence in the field of academics every year. The other part would go towards the infrastructure development of the primary wing of the school. Pinjra Tod stages protest demanding colleges remove curfews for women students

Pinjra Tod, a students' collective, staged a protest Wednesday asking all the colleges of Delhi University to have no curfews for women students. Members of the group marched through all colleges of North Campus to give a strong message to the administration that "we are not going to stop until our demands are met", they said. "We entered Stephens, Hindu, Ramjas, DRC, Miranda and Khalsa. The Miranda House principal Pratibha Jolly was pressured to come out and speak to the students who had stormed through the front gate," they claimed. Dr Ambedkar University holds first students' council polls

The first students' council polls of the Dr BR Ambedkar University were held peacefully on Wednesday, officials said. The approximate voter turnout in the three campuses of the university was 40 per cent (Kashmere Gate), 40 per cent (Karampura) and 55 per cent (Lodhi Road), the varsity officials said. "The response is very encouraging considering the fact that the university is non-residential and students came from far off places to cast their vote," they added. Agitating Presidency students urge Registrar to end deadlock

Agitating students of Presidency University on Wednesday urged Registrar Debojyoti Konar to end the impasse over their demand to be shifted to the under-renovation Hindu Hostel. The agitation, marked by an indefinite fast by a section of the students, entered the 10th day on Wednesday. The protesters asked Konar to respond in writing to their charter of demands, which include setting up of a committee comprising boarders for supervising the hostel renovation work, allowing boarders to stay in three rooms in the campus and dissolving the probe panel formed to find out those responsible for closure of the main gate in September. Manipur University students clash with police inside campus

Students of the crisis-hit Manipur University Wednesday clashed with security forces inside the campus during which police used tear gas shells, police sources said. The students were demonstrating in the campus demanding "unconditional release" of all the 15 teachers and students arrested in September following an FIR lodged on a complaint by acting Vice-Chancellor Prof K Yugindro. The clash broke out when the protesting students demanded to meet Yugindro and were prevented by policemen. Both the sides had a heated exchange of words following which the police personnel lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the agitators, sources said, adding several students were detained. The Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) denounced the police action on students. Earlier, MUTA members took mass casual leave Wednesday, university sources said. Some JNUTA members spreading misinformation against civil service rules: JNU

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration on Wednesday accused some JNUTA members of spreading misinformation against the Academic Council's approval of the ordinance related to application of CCS rules on service matters in the varsity. The JNU Teachers' Association (JNUTA) had said placing teachers under the Conduct of Central Services Rules (CCS), would mean the "very role that academics are supposed to play in the classroom and in civil society has become criminalised". The teachers' body had alleged that the current administration has decided to impose the rules, which restrict them from expressing dissent. The approval of the ordinance by the Academic Council on October 5 is in conformity with the earlier resolution of the Executive Council of JNU and a UGC letter dated May 1 this year, the university said. Govt to develop Skill Index for districts: Official

The government will develop a Skill Index to encourage competition between districts and improve their skill development and training performance, an official said Wednesday. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) also commenced the Aspirational Hunar Abhiyan 2018-19 to support the "Transformation of Aspirational Districts" programme of NITI Aayog today. "Post first phase, which is around mid-November, we will be identifying the parameters basis which the skill index will be developed to bring in healthy competition between districts and improvise on their overall performance. "This will act as a good measurement to assess the outcome periodically and keep the overall program outcome based and efficient," said Sunita Sanghi, Sr Advisor Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Students' union polls to be held on Oct 17 in Haryana

The Haryana government has decided to hold students' union elections in state colleges and universities on October 17. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar directed officials concerned to ensure smooth and peaceful conduct of the polls. The elections in the state are being held after a gap of 22 years. However, this year the government has decided to hold indirect polls to students' unions in Haryana. Through the indirect polls, class representatives (CRs) will be elected in colleges and department representatives (DRs) in universities, according to an official statement issued here. The CRs and DRs will further elect the president and other office bearers in the colleges and universities. Now original docs not mandatory for admission in colleges

Colleges cannot retain origin documents, have to return fees on admission withdrawal: UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has warned varsities and colleges against retention of original documents of admitted students and non-refund of fees in case an admission is withdrawn within one month. The higher educational institutions will be penalised with withdrawal of affiliation, deemed status and barred from receiving any assistance from the UGC if they fail to follow the directive. "No student will be required to submit any original academic and personal certificate like marksheet and school leaving certificate at the time of submission of admission form. No institution can take any original certificate into their custody. They can only ask for self attested copies of the documents," HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters. Child rights body issues notice to school head on Hindu-Muslim segregation of students

The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights on Wednesday issued a notice to the head of an NDMC-run school accused of segregating students on the basis of religion. The DCPCR, in a statement, said such a segregation can have an ill-effect on holistic learning and development of students and also negatively impact the social fabric of the country. The body also asked the school authorities to immediately dissolve the sections and not shuffle it on the basis of religion. The DCPCR has asked them to tell the reason behind shuffling students on the basis of their religion. Segregation case: NDMC suspends school in-charge; social divide won't be tolerated, says mayor

The head of an NDMC-run school in north Delhi's Wazirabad was suspended Wednesday for "segregating students" into Hindu and Muslim sections, the commissioner of the civic body said here, while denouncing his action as "unimaginable" and "unpardonable". "I was apprised of the allegations of students being segregated by our officials. We decided to probe the accusations, and unfortunately they were found to be true. SBI signs MoU with Nepal's National Banking Institute for human resource development

State Bank of India has signed an MoU with Kathmandu-based National Banking Institute (NBI) for the development of human resources of the latter, the country's largest lender said Wednesday. SBI signed the three-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NBI to establish a mutually beneficial strategic alliance for development of NBI's human resources by imparting education, training and research, SBI said in a statement. Under the MoU, the strategic training unit of SBI will impart education, training and development to facilitate transformation of NBI's HR department. An apex banking academy of Nepal, National Banking Institute is already in tie ups with leading institutions in India including IIMs, MDI, ISB, it said.
