The Madras High Court Monday dismissed a petition seeking reservation in educational institutions for children born to physically challenged people. A division bench of Justices S Manikumar and P T Asha said "the rule does not provide any reservation for children of the physically handicapped." According to petitioner, three per cent of the total available seats for admissions will be "horizontally reserved for differently-abled children as per provisions of the Disabilities (Equal opportunities, protection of rights and full participation) Act, 1995. "Though the reservation is available, these seats are not filled which is the ground reality," he said. It is very difficult for physically challenged parents to give moral support to their children as well as to assist them, especially at the primary and secondary school level, the petitioner said. As many as four students of an aided inter college here claimed they were attacked by some people at the behest of its authorities for complaining that singing "Vande Matram" and chanting "Bharat Mata ki Jai" were not allowed in the institute, police said. According to a complaint lodged by class XII student Anuj Kumar Gaur, he and his three friends were attacked outside the GMAM Inter College gate in the afternoon, ASP Vijay Pal Singh said. On Friday, some members of social welfare organisation Manas Mandir had visited the college on Bilthara Road and they found that the students were being punished for singing "Vande Mataram" or chanting "Bharat Mata ki Jai" after school prayers. British scientists have created 3D-printed meals for a school in east London to inspire an interest in science subjects among young pupils. Scientists from the annual Big Bang Fair, which promotes science, technology and maths (STEM) subjects, worked with St Helen's Primary School in Canning Town to create dishes such as geometric fish and chips, cauliflower cogs and a pie in the shape of the mathematical constant of 'Pi' as part of the project. "We were delighted when the Big Bang Fair approached us to be part of the 3D-printed school dinners project," said Claire O'Sullivan, a teacher at the school. "Demonstrating STEM in this way is a fantastic opportunity to allow our pupils to see innovative technology first-hand and there is nothing that gets them more excited than bringing classroom learning to life," she said. Students of Manipur University on Monday staged a sit-in protest in reaction to acting Vice-Chancellor Prof K Yugindro's remarks that compared them to "terrorists", a students' union leader said. Yugindro, in a letter to the MHRD on October 3, had sought immediate steps from the Centre to "save" the university from the hands of "terrorist-like" agitators. The agitators also sought withdrawal of the "baseless" FIR lodged by him on September 20, followed by a midnight raid by security forces, which led to the arrest of 89 students and teachers. The Manipur University's acting Vice Chancellor's remarks that state Governor Najma Heptulla extended "overt support" to agitators during a recent stir at the varsity has not gone down well with Raj Bhavan authorities who termed the comments as "unfortunate". In a communication to Prof K Yugindro Saturday, the Raj Bhavan said his statement made on October 3 in a letter to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, may amount to defamation as well as non-observance of protocol and propriety. At least 20 children were Monday injured when a truck rammed into a school bus in Shaktinagar area here, police said. The bus was carrying over 50 children of Central School, they said. Thirty minor girls of a school in Bihar's Supaul district were beaten up by a mob after they protested against lewd comments on a wall allegedly written by boys of a neighbouring school, police said Sunday. Three persons, including a woman, have been arrested in this connection following the registration of an FIR that named nine persons as accused, Superintendent of Police Mrityunjay Kumar Choudhary told PTI. The indefinite hunger strike by a section of the Presidency University here entered seventh day on Sunday, while one of the fasting students has been hospitalised in serious condition. Ten students were on indefinite fast at the campus demanding that students they be accommodated in the under renovation Hindu Hostel. The PWD has informed the university authorities that two blocks of the hostel would be ready by November 15. One of the fasting students, Mamun Badshah, was now under treatment at the Medical College and Hospital and in serious condition, a spokesman of the agitating student said. A minor girl, allegedly abducted and raped by two men at Chandramun area in Jajpur district, has been rescued from a nearby village, police said Sunday. The 15-year-old girl was rescued following a series of raids at various places near Chandramun and one of the accused arrested on Saturday, said S B Das, inspector-in-charge of Binjharpur police station. The accused has been identified as Santosh Kumar Jena (20) alias Chhuapua of Routara village.
