Manipur Univ students demonstrate against acting VC's remarks

Students of Manipur University on Monday staged a sit-in protest in reaction to acting Vice-Chancellor Prof K Yugindro's remarks that compared them to "terrorists", a students' union leader said. Yugindro, in a letter to the MHRD on October 3, had sought immediate steps from the Centre to "save" the university from the hands of "terrorist-like" agitators. The agitators also sought withdrawal of the "baseless" FIR lodged by him on September 20, followed by a midnight raid by security forces, which led to the arrest of 89 students and teachers. Of the 89, the police had released all but 15 whom Yugindro had named in the FIR for "wrongful confinement, illegal detention and attempt to murder", when he assumed charge as the acting VC on September 20, M Dayamand, president of Manipur University Students Union, said. Manipur University acting VC's remarks unfortunate: Raj Bhavan

The Manipur University's acting Vice Chancellor's remarks that state Governor Najma Heptulla extended "overt support" to agitators during a recent stir at the varsity has not gone down well with Raj Bhavan authorities who termed the comments as "unfortunate". In a communication to Prof K Yugindro Saturday, the Raj Bhavan said his statement made on October 3 in a letter to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, may amount to defamation as well as non-observance of protocol and propriety. "The Hon'ble governor is upset and surprised by your utterances which are misdirected and misleading...The governor was naturally disturbed and concerned with all that was happening on the campus, causing academic loss to thousands of students," the Raj Bhavan communique said. Yugindro, in his letter to the MHRD, had sought immediate steps from the Centre to "save" the university from the hands of "terrorists-like" agitators. 20 students injured in accident

At least 20 children were Monday injured when a truck rammed into a school bus in Shaktinagar area here, police said. The bus was carrying over 50 children of Central School, they said. The injured students were rushed to a hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable while the bus driver was stated to be critical. Police is probing the matter.

Sukma: Student abducted by Naxals found dead

The body of a college student, who was abducted by Naxals on Saturday night, has been found near Kundanpal village of Sukma district on Sunday.Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Meena confirmed the report and said that the deceased has been identified as Kunjami Shankar.Earlier on October 4, one more student was kidnapped by Naxals while he was traveling from Bhejji to Konta. 30 minor girls oppose lewd graffiti in Bihar school, thrashed

Thirty minor girls of a school in Bihar's Supaul district were beaten up by a mob after they protested against lewd comments on a wall allegedly written by boys of a neighbouring school, police said Sunday. Three persons, including a woman, have been arrested in this connection following the registration of an FIR that named nine persons as accused, Superintendent of Police Mrityunjay Kumar Choudhary told PTI. All the injured girls are students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Darpakha village in Supaul under Triveniganj police station of the district. The incident happened on Saturday evening when the girl students of the residential school were playing within the campus. "Both the schools are in the same campus with separate buildings and a common playground. The boys allegedly wrote some lewd comments on the wall of the girls school, which the minor girls resisted and beat up the boys before chasing them away," Supaul District Magistrate Baidyanath Yadav told PTI. Presidency hunger strike enters 7th day

The indefinite hunger strike by a section of the Presidency University here entered seventh day on Sunday, while one of the fasting students has been hospitalised in serious condition. Ten students were on indefinite fast at the campus demanding that students they be accommodated in the under renovation Hindu Hostel. The PWD has informed the university authorities that two blocks of the hostel would be ready by November 15. One of the fasting students, Mamun Badshah, was now under treatment at the Medical College and Hospital and in serious condition, a spokesman of the agitating student said. "Four students, including Mamun, had fallen ill in the past three days and had to be hospitalised. Three of them were discharged but they did not resume the fast because of their health conditions. Their place was taken up by three other students," the student spokesman Ujan said. The students' demands included setting up of a committee comprising boarders for supervising the Hindu .

Kidnapped girl rescued in Odisha: Police

A minor girl, allegedly abducted and raped by two men at Chandramun area in Jajpur district, has been rescued from a nearby village, police said Sunday. The 15-year-old girl was rescued following a series of raids at various places near Chandramun and one of the accused arrested on Saturday, said S B Das, inspector-in-charge of Binjharpur police station. The accused has been identified as Santosh Kumar Jena (20) alias Chhuapua of Routara village. According to the police, the girl had gone to her tuition classes village on Wednesday evening but did not return home. Her family members lodged a missing complaint at Binjharpur police station on Friday. The police arrested one of the accused from the place where the girl was kept. 550 students perform DNA isolation, set Guinness World Record

A group of 550 students from Lucknow who participated in the India International Science Festival (IISF), have registered a new Guinness World Record for being the 'maximum number of people to conduct a DNA isolation experiment'.The students of GD Goenka School here participated in the mass experiment. All students were given one banana each and they extracted the DNA of each of the bananas. Most of them extracted the DNA within one hour and one minute during the IISF. IIT Kharagpur and REDOC SPI, a French network of doctoral schools, have come together to strengthen institutional collaboration in doctoral education and research. Through this initiative, interaction and collaboration will be promoted between the IIT KGP and the REDOC SPI through visits and exchange programmes, joint academic and research doctoral programmes and joint supervision of doctoral students on a reciprocal basis, an IIT KGP statement said here on Saturday. DMC issues notice to North municipal body over Gayatri mantra circular to schools

The Delhi Minorities Commission has issued a notice to the North civic body over a circular issued by it for recital of 'Gayatri Mantra' in schools run by its education department. Chairman of Delhi Minorities Commission(DMC) Zafarul Islam Khan said the notice was recently issued to the education department of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). The education department of NDMC has been asked to explain "why a circular has been issued to its schools to make students recite Gayatri Mantra in morning assemblies. "Is this not against our secular polity and will this not cause division in the ranks of students and teachers as many belong to minority communities who may not like to recite mantras of religious nature," the notice asks. NDMC authorities have defended the move, saying recital of 'Gayatri Mantra' at schools run by the civic body was not mandatory. The Jamia Millia Islamia University administration has accepted the students' demand to appoint Turkish teachers, even as the students claimed they got only a 'verbal assurance' from the varsity, officials said Saturday.
