School management committees in Delhi to be known as Vidyalaya Kalyan Samitis

The school management committees (SMCs) in the national capital will now be known as Vidyalaya Kalyan Samitis with the Delhi Cabinet approving the renaming on Tuesday. The cabinet also decided that the funds will not be allocated as per the school building's size but on the basis of enrolment of students. "The fund requirement for this revamped scheme will be met from the budget head SMC Fund and an amount of Rs 56 crore has been proposed for the current financial year," an official statement said. The cabinet also approved the Directorate of Education (DoE)'s proposal for revision in remuneration of miscellaneous category of guest teachers. The department had proposed that the daily remuneration for miscellaneous category guest teachers may be brought at par with trained graduate teachers (with CTET qualification) and enhanced from Rs 1,050 to Rs 1,403 per day.

HC order on convent's plea over land acquisition for Metro

The Madras High Court has restrained authorities from issuing the notification for acquiring a portion of the playground of century-old Good Shepherd Convent here for the Metro Rail project. Justice V Bharathidasan passed the interim order on a petition by the school seeking to quash the June 13 last preliminary notice issued by the land acquisition officer proposing to acquire 3,590 sq m land of the institution for constructing a corridor for a Metro station. The judge directed the Land Acquisition Officer to give a personal hearing to the petitioner on October 1, consider the objections and pass orders on it before issuing a notification under section 3 (1) of the Tamil Nadu Acquisition of Land for Industrial Purposes Act, the judge added. Until final orders, the authorities were restrained from issuing any notification under the act, he said adjourning the petition by four weeks. Delhi Cabinet approves installation of CCTV cameras in govt schools

The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday approved the installation of CCTV cameras in government schools in the city to ensure safety of students. The Delhi government had last year mandated installation of CCTV cameras in all schools covering classrooms, labs, corridors, parking, library, vacant rooms, the areas outside washrooms, corners and other inaccessible areas. "The cabinet accorded its administrative approval and the expenditure sanction for the installation of CCTV cameras in government schools under the Directorate of Education (DoE). "The department's proposal was to seek administrative approval and expenditure sanction for the project of supply, installation, testing, commissioning and comprehensive annual maintainance contract of CCTV cameras in government schools," an official statement said. Prof R J Rao appointed VC of Barkatullah University

Professor R J Rao, Rector of Gwalior-based Jiwaji University, has been appointed as Vice Chancellor of Barkatullah University here, an official said. Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel made the appointment Monday, said a state Public Relations Department official. Rao will have a tenure of four years. Patel also gave additional charge as Vice Chancellor of Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University to D D Agarwal, who is secretary to the Governor, till further orders or the appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor, the official said. Class 10 girl gang-raped at boarding school in Dehradun

A Class 10 girl was allegedly gang-raped by fellow students at a boarding school in Sahaspur in Dehradun district and the matter was kept under wraps by the school authorities for over two weeks, according to the police. Nine people -- four students accused of perpetrating the crime and five members of the school staff including its director, principal and administrative officer -- have been arrested, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Ashok Kumar said. The matter came to light on Monday, over a month after it took place on August 14, he said. The survivor first confided her ordeal to her elder sister when she realised that she might be pregnant. Road blockade over admission procedure of state-run school

Agitated parents blocked a road Monday morning in the busy Jadavpur area, in the southern part of the city, to protest against the admission procedure of a state-run school. Jadavpur Vidyapith, a 60-year-old government-sponsored school, recently issued a statement to notify the introduction of a lottery system for admission to Class V from the next academic session. Armed men attack school in Cameroon's English-speaking area

Armed men attacked a school in Cameroon's southwest English-speaking region, wounding more than 20 people, a government official said Monday. An unknown number of armed men, using machetes and homemade guns, staged the attack on Saint Joseph's College near Buea late Sunday, according to South West Region governor Bernard Okalia Bilai. NCPCR recommends one nation one election, says it will benefit students

The NCPCR Monday recommended "one nation one election" proposal, saying teachers who remain occupied due to multiple polls would be able to give more time to students if simultaneous elections were held. Priyank Kanungo, member of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said such elections would benefit children the most. The commission have undertaken a desk review regarding implementation of section 27 of the Right to Education Act and involvement of teachers in non-academic activities. After perusal of the relevant reports and data, it has been observed that repeated engagements of teachers in election-related activities result in loss of precious academic time of students. Since school infrastructure and resources are also utilised during elections, 10 day per election are spent in the election related activities, the NCPCR report said. DSJ students protest against 'inadequate' facilities

Scores of students of Delhi University's Delhi School Of Journalism protested here on Monday against the administration "for not providing adequate lab facilities" in the department. Around 100 students gathered at the department and did not attend classes. They staged a protest at the main gate of the Delhi School Of Journalism (DSJ). Following the protest, police detained a student from the site, who was later released in the evening.
