West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday said that her government was committed to spread education in all sections of the people. "Today is International Literacy Day. A Southeast Texas school district says three students took control of a moving school bus after the driver became unconscious and later died. The Sealy school district said Friday that bus driver Gerald Gardner had just picked up students at a junior high school and was leaving the campus when he lost consciousness. The three students took the wheel and safely parked the bus. District officials say three other individuals arrived at the scene and performed CPR on Gardner after taking him off the bus. Gardner was later pronounced dead. A cause of death was not immediately known. In a statement, the school district says it was "extremely grateful" for Gardner's years of service. Sealy is located about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) west of Houston.

Two students of a law college here were detained by police Friday following a report filed by the college principal claiming that at least four students had applied seeking admissions to 3-year LLB courses by submitting fake caste certificates. The two students here are now being questioned in the police station, said local Malgodown police station IIC Debi Prasad Patra. While one of them is a SC student had submitted a fake ST certificate, the other is a general student who submitted a fake ST certificate to seek admission into M S Law College, Patra said. Two others named in the report did not turn up for admission on the day, he added. Law College principal Sukant K Nanda said doubts arose when it was found that each of these four students were issued with two acknowledgement cards bearing the same number. They had earlier applied in other categories. But failing to make the cut, they applied again in the special drive, he said.
A group of 90 school children from Jammu and Kashmir Friday met Union Minister Jitendra Singh here. The students, belonging to Bandipora and Samba districts of J&K, comprised 11 girls and 79 boys. A first year B.Com student of a private college in the district has been hospitalised after he was allegedly beaten up by five seniors in an alleged incident of ragging, police said Friday. The college authorities, however, claimed that prima facie it did not appear to be a case of ragging and maintained that it was a fallout of some personal issues. The incident occurred on September 5 outside the college campus at Vagamon and the student had been hospitalised with injuries, police said adding further investigation was on. The five senior students have been suspended, pending inquiry, college sources said. Police have registered a case against the suspended students based on the complaint by the junior student, who alleged that he was beaten up as part of ragging. Direct selling firm Amway Friday said it has set up a training centre here for the visually impaired, aimed at providing skills, enabling them to take up a career in the Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) sector. The new centre is the second such facility to be set up in Tamil Nadu by Amway India after the first in Madurai in 2013, which has trained more than 300 students. The Meghalaya cabinet Friday approved a proposal to increase the upper age limit for appointment of teachers in schools and colleges from 27 to 32, state education minister said. Candidates of ST category five years relaxation, Education Minister L Rymbui told reporters. "We need to have quality teachers. The more qualified teachers we have the more quality education will be provided to our children," he said. The cabinet also approved a proposal to hike the merit scholarship for lower primary school and upper primary school students from Rs 100 per month to Rs 600 and Rs 40 per month to Rs 600 respectively. Rymbui also said that the cabinet had also approved filling up of 16 lecturer posts in two colleges in the Garo Hills - 13 posts in Tura government college and 3 in Williamnagar government college.
