Universities in Bihar to have dress code for convocation

Formulating some change in the daily working of universities across Bihar, newly sworn-in Governor Lalji Tandon on Monday issued directives regarding the schedule and dress code of the convocation to be held in state universities.According to a circular, the newly issued dress code consists of Salwar-kurti for the female graduates, whereas the male graduates would be required to wear dhoti kurta for the convocation ceremony. The dress code has also been changed for other dignitaries attending convocation, ranging from Chief guest to the Chancellor of the university. The Malviya turban has been made mandatory for all the dignitaries to be present during the convocation.The Governor house has asked the universities to ensure no relaxation in the same as the convocation is one of the most important part of a university curriculum. Noida admin, HCL ink pacts to improve anganwadis, schools, health centres

The Gautam Buddh Nagar administration signed Monday three agreements with HCL Foundation for renovation of 50 'anganwadi' centres, 40 schools and four primary community health centres in the district. An official statement of the Gautam Budh Nagar district administration said it signed three memorandums of understanding (MoU) with the corporate social responsibility arm of the Indian multinational company HCL, headquartered in Noida. Some JNU teachers complain to HRD Minister against JNUTA

A group of JNU teachers has written to Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar, accusing the JNU Teachers' Association of presenting a "distorted version" of various academic decisions taken by the varsity. Last week, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) had penned an open letter to Javadekar seeking the removal of vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. A section of JNU teachers criticised the JNUTA and accused it of indulging in activities that are "contaminating the university". "JNUTA has been behaving like a self-serving club, with their personal ideological biases taking over the larger concerns of teaching, research and innovative methods in academic activities," the letter said. The open letter sent by the JNUTA has "sadly presented a distorted version of the administrative and academic decisions" taken by the JNU administration. PM to felicitate national award-winning teachers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will felicitate national award-winning teachers on Tuesday, ahead of Teachers' Day celebrated on September 5. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will confer National Awards for 2017 on the teachers on September 5. The teachers were selected under a revised guidelines aimed at selecting those who had shown innovation in their work and had added value to the school and to their students, according to a government statement. "The number of awardees was brought down to just 45 as this was necessary to restore the prestige of the awards. Under the earlier scheme, the number of awardees had crossed 300," the statement said. The nominated teachers gave a presentation last month before an independent jury comprising a senior educationist. Haryana govt renames schools

The Haryana government has renamed two state-run schools, officials said Monday. Kasolai Government Primary School would now be known as Government Primary School, Bakhapur, Rewari while Government Primary School, Nato Ka Majra as Government Primary School, Johar Majra Khurd Natan, a spokesman of the Elementary Education Department said. Proposals to this effect have been approved by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, he said.

School principal arrested for 'molesting' girl students in Guj

The principal of a residential school in Gujarat's Narmada district has been arrested on charges of molesting girl students, police said Monday. Four girls, in the age group of 14 to 17 years, alleged that the principal, Harshad Patel (36), molested them on several occasions in the recent past, Assistant Superintendent of Police Achal Tyagi said. Based on a complaint filed by one of the students of the government-funded school, located in Garudeshwar town, Patel was arrested Saturday, he said. He was booked under IPC section 354 (assault or criminal force on woman with an intent to outrage her modesty) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. BSEB declares secondary compartmental examination results

The Bihar Secondary Education Board (BSEB) on Monday declared the results of the secondary compartmental examination, which revealed a pass percentage of 26.63 per cent only.Out of 2,16,455 students who appeared in the compartment exam, a total of 57,642 students managed to clear the test, BSEB chairman Anand Kishore confirmed.He further revealed that results of 348 students have been withheld since the students did not fill up the set code on their objective question paper."There are 348 students who missed to fill the set code on their objective question paper. The result of such students has been withheld. Such students can fill their question paper set code on BSEB portal from September 4 to 6. On that basis, their results will be declared," Kishore informed.The BSEB examination was held between July 31 and August 2.

Phone ban at school: French children forced to hang up

French children who are going back to school today after summer vacation will have to do so without their mobile phones. The government passed a law banning phone use in all primary and middle schools for the entire day, including during breaks with exceptions in cases of emergency and for disabled children. Pupils are requested to shut down their mobiles or put them in a locker. High schools can also voluntarily implement the measure. Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said it aims to help children focus on lessons, better socialize and reduce social media use. The ban is also designed to fight online bullying, and prevent thefts and violence in school. The law allows teachers to confiscate phones until the end of the day in cases of non-compliance.

Learning to lie may have cognitive benefits: Study

Children who lie early in their life tend to have much better cognitive abilities, a study claims. "As parents and teachers -- and society as a whole -- we always worry that if a kid lies there will be terrible consequences," said Kang Lee from the University of Toronto in Canada. "But it turns out there is a big difference between kids who lie earlier and those who lie later. The kids who lie earlier tend to have much better cognitive abilities," Lee said. In the study published in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, researchers asked 42 preschool-aged children in China -- who showed no initial ability to lie -- how to play a hide-and-seek game. India has made rapid progress in increasing access to sanitation in schools, the United Nations said in a report, noting that the proportion of schools without any sanitation facility has decreased at a fast pace in the country. A new joint UN agency study, 'Drinking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools: 2018 Global Baseline Report,' says that good hygiene facilities in schools provide the basis of a healthy learning environment, and that girls are more likely to attend when they are on their period. The annual report is produced by the World Health Organization/UN Children's Fund Joint Monitoring Programme, or JMP, which has been monitoring global progress on drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) since 1990. 2 school students drown after vehicle falls into canal in UP

Two school students, on their way home after a picnic, were killed when their vehicle fell into a canal here Sunday, police said. The incident took place Sunday evening when the school students and three teachers were returning after a picnic at the Rajdari fall in Naugrah, Circle Officer Chakia Kunwar Prabhat Singh told PTI. "There were 17 passengers in the ill-fated vehicle. The deceased have been identified as Muskaan (8) and Ruchi (18)," he said. "As the vehicle fell into the canal, local boys jumped into it and were able to rescue 15 people. Locals say that the driver told them that the steering of the vehicle had failed, which led to the accident," Singh said. Three school boys held for 'sexually harassing' class mate in

Three students of a private school here were arrested here Sunday for allegedly sexually harassing their class mate, police said. Four class ten students of the school had repeatedly 'sexually harassed' the minor boy, who complained to his father about it, they said. Manipur varsity row: VC Pandey orders ban on protesting bodies
