The Delhi High Court today suggested to DU's Law Faculty to declare the results of students who were allowed to sit for their semester exams on court orders due to shortage of attendance, and said those who have failed can take supplementary examinations to be conducted soon. The Punjab Cabinet today approved the formation of the state higher education council, aimed at ensuring quality education. A bill in this regard will be brought in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, an official spokesperson said. "The move is aimed at ensuring planned and coordinated development of higher education in the state. "The council to be headed by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will have the higher education minister as its vice-chairman and administrative secretary, higher education as member secretary," he said. The move would fulfil one of the pre-requisites of the next phase of Rashtriya Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan-2 (RUSA) for the state to be eligible for receiving grants under the central scheme. The HRD Ministry has decided against conducting NEET, the medical entrance exam, twice a year and also dropped its ambitious plan of holding it only in online mode, officials said. The decision has been taken following recommendations from the Health Ministry, which raised concerns about conducting the exam twice a year saying that such an arrangement may put additional pressure on students. The Health Ministry also voiced concern about students living in rural areas, who may suffer if the exam is conducted in online mode only. Last month, Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar had announced that the newly-formed National Testing Agency (NTA) would conduct the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, along with the Joint Entrance Examination-Main for admission to engineering colleges, twice a year. This is the first time the exam will be conducted twice a year and completely in online mode. The newly formed National Testing Agency announced the exam schedule today. The Maharashtra government today decided to introduce a foreign education scholarship scheme for the 'open' (general) category and other backward class (OBC). Students from the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) already get scholarship for studying in foreign varsities. The new scheme will cover the open category students, OBCs, as well as those from 'Vimukt Jaati and Bhatkya Jamati' (nomadic and denotified tribes), said an official from the Chief Minister's Office. Every year, 20 students will get the scholarship. Ten of them will be from the open category. The announcement comes against the backdrop of Maratha community's agitation for quota. The politically influential community falls in the Open category. The selected students will get funding for taking admission to 200 leading foreign universities, said the official. The director of Dehradun's National Institute for Visually Handicapped, Anuradha Dalmia, resigned following allegations of sexual harassment against a music teacher of the institute by girl students, officials said today. She resigned last evening after the Uttarakhand Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson Usha Negi visited the institute to conduct an investigation. The resignation comes nearly a week after the students began an agitation accusing their music teacher of touching them improperly and demanding his arrest. English-speaking AI robots will be helping out in some 500 Japanese classrooms from next year as the country seeks to improve its English skills among both children and teachers. The education ministry plans a pilot project costing around 250 million yen (USD 227,000) to improve Japanese students' notoriously weak oral and written English, an official told AFP. "AI robots already on the market have various functions. Colleges in West Bengal can extend the date for admission to undergraduate courses beyond the deadline of August 20 if there are vacant seats, state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee has said. Asked about reports of hundreds seats lying vacant in several colleges in the city and all over the state, Chatterjee told reporters yesterday that it would have to be looked on a case-by-case basis.
