Maratha quota: Parents keep away kids from schools in Parbhani

Maratha community members from at least two villages in Maharashtra's Parbhani district have stopped sending their children to schools in support of the quota demand. The Maratha families, most of them farmers from Sarola Budruk and Takalgavhan villages in Pathri taluka, feel that sending their wards to schools is of no use, as there are no jobs in government. At least 85 students of total 118 have not been attending the Zilla Parishad (ZP)-run primary and secondary school in Sarola Budruk village since August 4, a teacher said today on the condition of anonymity. "Of the 118 students, only 33 students had attended the school in the last two days," he said. Some parents said today that they would not send their wards to schools until the state government announced reservation for the Maratha community in government jobs and education. J-K govt calls for establishing Child Protection Committees in schools

The Jammu and Kashmir government has called for setting up of Child Protection Committees in all schools and other educational centres to safeguard children's rights. Jammu Deputy Commissioner Ramesh Kumar at a meeting directed school heads and representatives to take onus of protecting children. "For that there is need to take appropriate measures," he said. A meeting was convened to discuss the framework, necessity for establishing, promoting and strengthening child protection mechanism that recognises, promotes and protects child rights at the grassroots level. Bill to replace ordinance on private school fee structure

The Uttar Pradesh government will table a bill in the upcoming monsoon session of the state legislature to replace the UP Self-Financed Schools (Fixation of Fee) Ordinance, 2018, which regulates the fee structure in private schools. The state cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, today gave its approval in this regard. The bill, which will replace the ordinance, aims at regulating the fee structure in private schools and check arbitrary fee hikes. It will also cover minority institutions that have enrolled students in classes 1 to 12 and charge over Rs 20,000 per year as fees. This will directly benefit the students, their parents and guardians in checking unnecessary financial burden and help improve the standard of education, a government spokesman said. A brief session of the state legislature commences on August 23.

Gujarat to name and shame around 6,500 erring teachers

The Gujarat government will publish in its monthly magazine the names of around 6,500 school teachers who committed errors while evaluating board examination answer sheets. The teachers had committed more than one mistake in evaluating the answer sheets of students of classes 10 and 12, who appeared for the board exams held in March-April this year, an official of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) said. The names of the erring teachers would be published in the board's monthly magazine 'Madhyamik Shikshan ane Parikshan', circulated in around 17,000 secondary and higher secondary schools in the state, GSHSEB Chairman A J Shah said today. At present, the board charges a penalty of Rs 50 for each mistake in Class 10 board exam paper and Rs 100 for Class 12 paper. Scholarship for poor girls from AP, Telangana, Karnataka

Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting today announced the third edition of Santoor Women's Scholarship programme to help poor girl students pursue a degree of a minimum three-year period. The scholarship rolled out in collaboration with 'Wipro Cares' is offered to the students from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Each student is awarded of Rs 24,000 per annum. "Santoor Scholarship is a platform for empowering underprivileged girls by providing them with the financial support necessary for completing their graduation. We hope the girl students will come forward and use this opportunity," senior general manager of Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting S Prasanna Rai told reporters here. St Xavier's University starts MBA course

The St Xavier's University today started an MBA course under its Xavier's Business School with 80 students. The residential MBA course is being offered in four streams, University Vice-Chancellor Father Felix Raj told reporters here. "From today we are offering the MBA course which will be for two years and today is the first day," Raj said adding that the university has got the approval of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to run the course. He said industrialist Sanjiv Goenka, an alumnus of the St Xavier's College and School, has been associated with the project. Goenka said "It is very inspirational for me to come and interact with these youngsters on the first day." Raj also said the university was planning to start a law course in a couple of years.

Violence erupts at Manipur varsity, cops fire tear gas shells

A clash had broken out between the protesting students and a group of people that demanded "resumption of classes" at Manipur University in Imphal West district, where prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC had been in force since July 25, a senior official said. Tuition teacher held for sexually abusing minor girl

A 55-year old tuition teacher was arrested today on the charge of sexually abusing a minor girl student at nearby Palode, police said. Manoj was detained after the 8-year old student informed her parents about the abuse, who in turn lodged a complaint with the police. He was running a tuition centre at his home. Some other students have also made similar complaints against the teacher, police said. Japan med school confirms altering scores to keep out women

A Tokyo medical school has confirmed after an internal investigation that it systematically altered entrance exam scores for years to keep out female applicants and ensure more men became doctors. Tokyo Medical University manipulated all entrance tests results since 2000 or even earlier. The findings released Tuesday by lawyers involved in the internal investigation confirm recent reports in Japanese media. The manipulation surfaced during an investigation of an alleged wrongful admission of a bureaucrat's son. The internal investigation found the school first reduced all applicants' first-stage scores to 80 percent then added up to 20 points only to male applicants with three or fewer application tries. The school wanted fewer female doctors because it anticipated they would become mothers and would shorten or halt their careers.

Student molested by seniors in school bus: Police

A nine-year-old male student of a private school in Delhi was allegedly molested by three senior students in their school bus on three different occasions, police said today. The incidents happened in the last week of July, they said. Yesterday the student narrated the incidents to his mother, following which a complaint was filed at Vivek Vihar police station. The victim alleged that he was touched inappropriately by three other male students in a school bus, a senior officer said. A case has been registered against the three students under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police investigation is underway and legal action will be taken accordingly.

DU prof writes to PM over delay in admission process to UG courses at SOL

A professor of the Delhi University's School of Open Learning (SOL) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern about the delay in commencement of the admission process to under-graduate courses at the institute. In his letter to Modi, Secretary Staff Council, SOL, Janmejoy Khuntia, has urged the prime minister to intervene in the matter by instructing the University Grants Commission and the Delhi University to allow the admission process for B.A. and B.Com, and Honours programmes for the current academic session.
