He completed his MSc in geology from Aligarh Muslim University in 1977 followed by an MPhil in Ore Petrology from JNU in 1980. He then completed his PhD in Igneous Petrology from JNU in 1985. West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee today urged the agitating students of the Presidency University to call off their sit-in which entered the fourth day, and said work for renovation of the old hostel building should have been completed on time. The students have been holding an indefinite sit-in inside the campus demanding that they be alloted rooms in the Hindu Hostel, which is under renovation since 2015. Had the renovation work of the hostel building been completed on time, the situation might not have come to such a pass, Chatterjee told reporters. The Sikh community in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province is all set to get an exclusive primary school for their children's education with the administration initiating the process for the same, officials said today. The Sikh community at Mohallah Jogan Shah in Dabgari area had recently approached the KP government, requesting it to set up a school for their children. Following the request, the government decided to set up a primary school for the minority community in the area. The first medical college in Mizoram was today inaugurated by Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla. The chief minister inaugurated the Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research (MIMER) at Falkawn, about 20 km south of Aizawl. The classes in the MIMER would commence from next week with 73 students including around 10 NRIs already admitted, officials said. The Haryana government will give land free of cost to 'gurukuls' which provide free education to children, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said today. Maratha community members from at least two villages in Maharashtra's Parbhani district have stopped sending their children to schools in support of the quota demand. The Maratha families, most of them farmers from Sarola Budruk and Takalgavhan villages in Pathri taluka, feel that sending their wards to schools is of no use, as there are no jobs in government. At least 85 students of total 118 have not been attending the Zilla Parishad (ZP)-run primary and secondary school in Sarola Budruk village since August 4, a teacher said today on the condition of anonymity. The Uttar Pradesh government will table a bill in the upcoming monsoon session of the state legislature to replace the UP Self-Financed Schools (Fixation of Fee) Ordinance, 2018, which regulates the fee structure in private schools. The state cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, today gave its approval in this regard. The bill, which will replace the ordinance, aims at regulating the fee structure in private schools and check arbitrary fee hikes. It will also cover minority institutions that have enrolled students in classes 1 to 12 and charge over Rs 20,000 per year as fees. This will directly benefit the students, their parents and guardians in checking unnecessary financial burden and help improve the standard of education, a government spokesman said. A brief session of the state legislature commences on August 23.

The Gujarat government will publish in its monthly magazine the names of around 6,500 school teachers who committed errors while evaluating board examination answer sheets. The teachers had committed more than one mistake in evaluating the answer sheets of students of classes 10 and 12, who appeared for the board exams held in March-April this year, an official of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) said. The names of the erring teachers would be published in the board's monthly magazine 'Madhyamik Shikshan ane Parikshan', circulated in around 17,000 secondary and higher secondary schools in the state, GSHSEB Chairman A J Shah said today. At present, the board charges a penalty of Rs 50 for each mistake in Class 10 board exam paper and Rs 100 for Class 12 paper. The St Xavier's University today started an MBA course under its Xavier's Business School with 80 students. The residential MBA course is being offered in four streams, University Vice-Chancellor Father Felix Raj told reporters here. "From today we are offering the MBA course which will be for two years and today is the first day," Raj said adding that the university has got the approval of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to run the course. A 55-year old tuition teacher was arrested today on the charge of sexually abusing a minor girl student at nearby Palode, police said. Manoj was detained after the 8-year old student informed her parents about the abuse, who in turn lodged a complaint with the police. He was running a tuition centre at his home. Some other students have also made similar complaints against the teacher, police said. A case has been registered against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), they added.

A nine-year-old male student of a private school in Delhi was allegedly molested by three senior students in their school bus on three different occasions, police said today. The incidents happened in the last week of July, they said. Yesterday the student narrated the incidents to his mother, following which a complaint was filed at Vivek Vihar police station. The victim alleged that he was touched inappropriately by three other male students in a school bus, a senior officer said.
