More than 71 per cent candidates appearing for the August 9 exams for posts of assistant loco pilot and technicians have been allocated centres within 200 km of their cities, railways said in a statement today. The clarification came in response to a question raised in the Lok Sabha by Congress MP Ranjit Ranjan over allocation of exam centres far from the candidates' residence. In a statement, railways said while 34 lakh candidates have been allocated seats in the same city or in nearby cities within 200 km, about 40 lakh or 83 per cent have been given seats within 500 km. "About 99 per cent candidates with disabilities and women candidates have been provided centres within 200 km itself," the statement said. The Andhra Pradesh government is in the process of setting up 'iHub' (the intelligent hub), a first-of-its kind global research centre for scientific learning with an initial investment of Rs 245 crore spread over five years, a senior official said. The government has already entered into an MoU with UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) for the purpose, the official said adding suitable location is being identified for the iHub to cover all components of the initiative with necessary road infrastructure. "There will be an initial seed funding of Rs 245 crore for startups and operational expenses. Our government will provide a guaranteed demand from government schools for training purpose and also the educational institutions can procure learning products from the iHub. West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee today told the assembly that state colleges had been informed not to allow any kind of intervention by student unions during admission. Replying during the question hour, Chatterjee said application to the colleges had been made online as well as payment of admission fees eliminating the need for any manual intervention. He said that some stray incidents took place in one or two colleges out of so many and some sections of the media was creating an unnecessary hype about it. The minister said that the government had taken strict action against those trying to disrupt the admission process and also some arrests had been made. Regarding recruitment of teachers in schools, he said some people were going to court for cancelling panels. He said that if this practice continued, then the government would also move the High Court and also examine alternative ways of recruitment.
Students of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here have demanded an "impartial probe" into the alleged suicide by a 20-year-old female student of the AIIMS, Jodhpur. They held a candle march in Bhopal last evening and alleged that the student, Rashmi Yadav, ended her life after harassment by a teacher. Yadav, a native of Alwar district in Rajasthan, had taken admission in AIIMS, Jodhpur, on July 23. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her hostel room on the night of July 26. "We demand an impartial probe into the suicide of the student, who took the extreme step allegedly due to harassment at the hands of a teacher," Sant Guru Prasad, former president of AIIMS Bhopal student's union, told reporters here. This is the third such incident at AIIMS, Jodhpur, in the last three years, claimed Prasad, who led the candle march. The National Defence Academy here has included Kashmiri, Pashto and Dari languages in its curriculum from this academic year, a move that will help young officers during their posting in Jammu and Kashmir. The course started this month and these languages will be compulsorily taught to cadets in their last year (of the three-year course) at the academy, a National Defence Academy (NDA) official told PTI. "Young leaders are invariably required to serve on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, where Pashto and Dari languages are frequently used by the adversary. "Kashmiri is our language and we have a large number of men from the state," the official said. Dari and Pashto are languages spoken in Afghanistan. Deaf and mute students of a school staged a protest here today and accused the Rajasthan government of ignoring their needs. Students of the state-run Seth Anandilal Poddar Senior Secondary school demanded that their principal be replaced with one capable of understanding sign language. They said the new arrangement of two shifts in a single day was taxing and that it should be reverted back to the set up of a single shift per day. The students protested outside their school on JLN Road with placards reading 'we want those who understand our language'. Amid continuing criticism over institution of eminence tag for Jio Institute, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar today said only a "Letter of Intent" has been issued to it. As many as 114 applications were received, including 40 from the private sector, for being considered as Institutions of Eminence. Javadekar told the Lok Sabha that out of the 40 private sector applications, 11 were in the greenfield sector. Besides Jio Institute, two other institutions -- Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences (BITS), Pilani and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal -- from the private sector were issued LoIs, the minister said. The AIADMK in the Lok Sabha today opposed centralised entrance test for medical and engineering courses and demanded that state governments be allowed to hold such examinations. When M Thambui Durai (AIADMK), who is also the Deputy Speaker, raised the issue, several members cutting across party lines supported him by thumping on their tables. Raising the issue during Question Hour, Thambi Durai said since the National Testing Agency will hold entrance tests twice a year, students would spend more time preparing for it than concentrate on their Class XII syllabus. He said such joint or combined tests only help elites get through. He said shortage of doctors in rural areas is because states are not allowed to hold tests. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said a total of 24 lakh students take the JEE and NEET entrance exams (12 lakh each). State governments hold other tests and nearly 1.50 crore students appear in those tests. Responding to a supplementary, Javadekar clarified .

The Goa government is receiving "very good" response to "value education" it started imparting to the students in schools from the current academic year, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said here today.
