The two-day state-wide general strike called by the Manipur University Student's Union (MUSU) demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey today disrupted normal life with vehicular movement being blocked and business establishments and markets remaining shut. As many as 2.52 crore minority students, half of them girls, availed three scholarship schemes being offered by the government, Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said today. Naqvi said in Lok Sabha that scholarships are being given for the education empowerment of minority students, including girl students all over the country. All the three scholarship schemes are implemented through the National Scholarship Portal and the disbursement of scholarship is made under the Direct Benefit Transfer mode, which eliminates duplication and leakage, he said during the Question Hour. Naqvi said so far 2.52 crore students belonging to minority communities have availed the scholarships, 50 per cent of whom were girls. The Madras High Court has directed a university to refund fees collected from eight students and to pay them Rs 25 lakh each as compensation within 45 days for admitting them under the NRI quota when they had not appeared for the NEET and thereby, spoiling their career. Responding to a PIL filed by activist Chandravadan Dhruv over a delay in the process of admission under the RTE Act, the government told the division bench of Chief Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice V M Pancholi that for 1,12,265 seats available for the year 2018-19, a total of 1,87,660 applications were received. "After scrutiny, 1,25,784 applications were confirmed and approved by respondent authorities. A total of 3,097 applications were rejected, out of which 2,208 were rejected on the ground of 'fake income certificate' as these certificates were not issued by the Mamlatdar," the state government told HC. The state government informed court that it would proceed against the erring applicants. The HRD Ministry has reconstituted a fact-finding committee to inquire into the allegations of administrative negligence and misutilisation of funds by Manipur University vice chancellor Aditya Prasad Pandey, an official order from the ministry said today. The Centre, on July 12, formed a fact-finding committee, comprising a representative of the UGC and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, to probe the allegations against Pandey, but the agitators refused to cooperate with the panel and called the move a "ploy to undermine their democratic movement". Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh welcomed the reconstitution of the committee and appealed to the students and the teachers to call off the agitation. The central government has renewed the appointment of Prof D Sahasrabudhe as the chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved renewal of appointment of Sahasrabudhe till he attains the age of 65 years, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry said. He was appointed to the top post of the country's technical education regulator in July 2015. Agastya International Foundation and Honeywell India today announced the expansion of their experiential science education programme to cover government schools in four more cities, including Hyderabad. The Honeywell Science Experience for students and teachers of government schools would now cover schools in Hyderabad, Chennai, Madurai and Mysuru.
