The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) will start functioning from the current academic year, Tripura Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath informed the Assembly. The IIIT will initially operate from the campus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Agartala, the minister said yesterday in reply to a calling attention notice moved by Sushanta Chowdhury and Dilip Das on the progress of establishing the IIIT in the state. Nath said the project was approved by the Centre in Public Private Partnership (PPP) model in July, 2012. The project was delayed by six years due to lack of initiative by the erstwhile Left Front government, he said adding that the newly formed BJP-IPFT government was not ready to waste a single day on the matter. Pinjra Tod, an autonomous collective of women students, has accused the central varsity of Jamia Millia Islamia of yet again curtailing the hostel timings of girls till 9 pm, as gainst the promised 10 30 pm deadline. Women hostellers of Jamia Milia Islamia had led a powerful struggle last semester to extend their curfew timing to 10.30pm, which was agreed to by the administration in writing, the collective claimed. However, the Jamia administration in a brazen, non-transparent, authoritative and undemocratic move, has now brought back the hostel timings to 9 pm, that too during vacations, it said. "This is printed on the new prospectus along with a new rule that states that hostellers 'will not indulge in any protest or signature campaign against hostel rules, regulations or timings'," a statement by the Pinjra Tod said. Facing flak over evaluation errors in answer scripts of class 10 and 12 board exams, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has initiated action against 130 teachers in the country. Similar action is likely to be ordered by more regional offices against schools, teachers or coordinators where evaluation errors have been found, according to the board's officials. The highest number of erring teachers are from Patna where 45 of them have been held responsible for "the gross carelessness committed by them resulting in severe hardships for the candidates and tarnishing the board's reputation", a senior board official said. An expert panel has recommended that the Tripura government should adopt National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) curriculum for schools in Tripura, state minister Ratan Lal Nath said today. The panel also suggested implementation of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus across all government and government-aided schools in the state, the education minister said. A six-member expert committee headed by former Tripura University Vice Chancellor Professor Arunoday Saha submitted its recommendation yesterday, the minister said, adding, the committee suggested implementation of the CBSE syllabus to reduce the burden of books on students and discourage rote learning. The Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB) has decided to rope in engineering students to assess the quality of construction materials being used in various development works undertaken by it in the state. The work of sample collection will begin on July 1, a release quoting a senior official said. Under this initiative, the Board has tied up with the Jai Parkash Mukand Lal Innovative Engineering and Technology Institute (JMIETI), Kurukshetra. Teachers and students of the JMIETI will jointly collect samples from work sites. They would get the samples tested at a laboratory and send the findings to the state government, HSAMB, Chief Administrator, Mandeep Singh Brar, said. Since the JMIETI would do this work free of cost, it would reduce the expenses incurred by the Board on getting sampling works done by outside agencies, he said. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has served notices to schools in the city to suspend five teachers after miscalculations of marks were found in Class 10 and Class 12 board exam papers during reevaluation at the request of the aggrieved students. According to board officials, similar action is likely to be ordered by regional offices against schools where evaluation errors have been found. "The re-evaluation saw some students in the Delhi region getting 50-55 marks more than what they had initially got when the results were declared in May this year. In one case, a student, who had initially failed in Urdu, passed after re-evaluation. A detailed report is being prepared in the matter," a CBSE official said. "Five teachers from the Delhi region three from government schools and two from private schools are supposedly to be suspended.
