DUTA calls off evaluation boycott in 'students' interest'
The Delhi University Teachers' Association today called off its evaluation boycott "in the interest of students" and with assurances from the HRD Ministry that working ad hoc teachers will not be displaced, according to a statement issued by the teachers' body. They had begun the evaluation boycott on May 9. The teachers' body has, however, warned that its members would go on strike if ad hoc teachers are displaced in the new academic session on the basis of the UGC's March 5 notification on faculty reservation. Following an Allahabad High Court order, upheld by the Supreme Court, the University Grants Commission (UGC) on March 5 announced a new mechanism for implementing faculty reservations, which is calculating total posts department-wise rather than institution-wise. The UGC said that its new reservation formula was in response to a direction of the Allahabad High Court in April last year. However, it is believed that the move would cut the number of posts available for Scheduled .
Smart classes in Pb govt schools to commence soon: Official
The education department has decided to start smart classes in 2,800 government schools in Punjab soon, an official said here today. The motive of this whole exercise is to streamline the education system by delivering quality education, Director General School Education Parshant Goyal said. Under the campaign, laptops, multimedia projectors and high-speed Internet access would be provided to 1,000 primary and 1,800 secondary schools incurring Rs 64 crore, he said.
Taking significant steps to fill varsity vacancies: Javadekar
Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday said that the government is taking all "significant steps", including filing a petition in the Supreme Court to reverse the mode of recruitment, to fill the vacancies of universities teachers across the country.

Soon, 'smart classes' in Gurugram govt schools
The Gurugram administration will next month launch a pilot project in 17 government schools under which students would be taught in "smart classes" using tablets, an official spokesman said here today. The EduTech project will be rolled out in the first week of July, the spokesman said. He said the EduTech project aims to connect government school students with technology. The project will be initially launched in 17 schools in Gurugram and three in Rewari. The State Council of Educational Research and Training has given training to principals and teachers of the schools. The spokesman said the project is based on "tab lab" concept, which would be made available to students of Class 1-8. Similarly, the spokesman said, "smart classes" would be organised for students of Class 9-12, where children would be taught with the help of projectors. The project would be run for three years and could be replicated in other districts, he added.

Increased autonomy for higher education institutions, enhanced focus on innovation and research, and changes in no-detention policy were among the major initiatives taken by the HRD Ministry during the four years of the NDA government, Prakash Javadekar said here today. School teacher stabbed by teenager
A school teacher was allegedly knifed near the Bodinayakanur bus stand by an unidentified teenager this morning, police said. Malathy (42) raised an alarm and the assailant, believed to be aged 18 or 19, took to his heels, they said, adding that she has been hospitalised. The teacher, on the way to the school, said she couldn't identify the attacker as she was too stunned and shocked, when the incident took place. A search is on the teen, the police added.

CTET will be held in 20 languages: Javadekar
Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has directed CBSE to continue conducting the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) in the 20 Indian languages as earlier. The directive by Javadekar came following criticism of CBSE's decision to remove 17 languages including Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati and Bengali from the list of options for CTET. Schools asked to form committees to handle sexual harassment complaints
The Delhi government has directed all schools in the national capital to ensure formation of Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) to deal with complaints of sexual harassment. "As per the provisions under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 all schools are directed to ensure constitution of ICC," the Directorate of Education (DoE) said in a fresh communication to school principals. According to norms prescribed by DoE, there shall not be less than four members including Presiding Officer in the ICC. "The Presiding Officer of the committee shall be a woman employed at senior level in the school and at least half of the members should be women. One member must be from the NGOs or associations committed to cause of women or person familiar with issues relating to sexual harassment " the DoE letter said. DUTA, DU admin deadlock over reservation mechanism ends
The deadlock between Delhi University Teachers' Association and DU administration over several issues, including a new faculty reservation mechanism, ended after a meeting between the vice-chancellor and the office-bearers of the teachers' body, DUTA said today. The vice-chancellor considered the situation precipitated by UGC's March 5 notification on the reservation roster and assured DUTA that DU will try to get all working ad-hoc faculty continued in the new session, subject to the impending Supreme Court hearing of July 2, it said in a statement. The VC made an appeal to DUTA to lift its nearly month-long evaluation boycott in the interests of students. Amarinder seeks review of revised guidelines on post-matric scholarship for SC students
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has urged the Centre to review the revised guidelines for the post-matric scholarship scheme for Scheduled Castes students. Singh pointed out that "these guidelines amounted to the Centre indirectly absolving itself of contributing any money towards the scheme in Punjab..." In a letter written to Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot, the chief minister cited the revised guidelines, dated May 3, 2018, received by his government to note that the move was highly detrimental to furthering the career prospects of poor SC students, who could not pay the high tuition and admission fees being charged by the educational institutions at the time of admission.
