Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has approved the report of the Common Pay Committee (CPC) 2017 for the non-teaching staff of seven universities in the state, an official release said today. The governor asked the university authorities to take up the matter with the Finance, Higher Education and departments concerned to disburse salaries and allowances of the non-teaching staff of the universities as per the recommendations of the CPC, it said. The seven universities are Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Assam Agricultural University, Bodoland University, Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, Cotton University and Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, it said.
The Madras High Court today directed the state CB-CID, probing the alleged sex scandal involving a woman assistant professor at a college in Virudhunagar district, to file its counter in two weeks. The first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Juctice P T Asha passed the interim order and posted the plea to July 2 for further hearing. On May 11, the High Court had passed the interim order restraining the circulation of the contents of retired IAS officer Santhanam committee report on the issue. The court ordered the government to keep the report in a sealed cover till further orders. The issue related to the assistant professor Nirmala Devi allegedly asking the students of the college to extend sexual favours to the higher officials of the institution in return for marks and money. The Delhi University today appealed to its teachers to end their evaluation boycott in the larger interest of the career of students. Reacting to the development, the Delhi University Teachers' Association said in a statement that instead of reminding teachers of their duties, the DU administration should enter into a genuine dialogue and take concrete, visible steps and give assurance towards resolution of issues which can be resolved at the university level. The DUTA had begun the evaluation boycott from May 9. The Delhi University today said that a meeting was held with the deans of the various faculties of the university and with principals of the colleges to discuss the issues of boycott of the evaluation of the answer scripts of the examinations held during May-June 2018. Over two-and-a-half-lakh students registered for undergraduate courses in Delhi University (DU) on its admission portal this year, an increase from the last year. The DU threw open its admission portal for aspirants of various undergraduate courses (UG) on May 15. The registration for the UG programmes ended at 11.59 pm last night. The varsity has, for now, announced a total of five cut-offs with the notification for the first cut-off scheduled to be issued on June 19. Total male applicants were 1,44,248, female 1,34,297, and other applicants 29, he said. According to an official from the university, 2,78,544 aspirants made payments. Last year, around 2.20 lakh candidates had made payments, he added. The number of unreserved applicants stands at 1,75,719 and SC and ST applicants number 34,932 and 7,547 respectively.
Noting that Rs 25-35 lakh fee per annum for medical courses was "prima facie far too high", the Madras High Court today directed deemed universities in Tamil Nadu to collect Rs 13 lakh for MBBS courses as an interim measure, pending University Grants Commission's (UGC) fee fixation committee's decision. A bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice P T Asha gave the direction while disposing of a PIL by Jawaharlal Shanmugam, who submitted that these institutions were charging exorbitant tuition fees and gave details in a tabular column. "It appears to us that fees varying between Rs 25 lakh to Rs 35 lakh per annum is prima facie far too high and the fee committee constituted by UGC ought to make an in-depth study and recommend the fees to be collected by the institutions," the bench said in its order. An estimated 83.75 per cent students of the total 8,04,895 examinees passed class XII examinations, conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE), as per the results announced today. This year, 8,04,895 candidates sat for the examination, of whom 6,63,516 students passed, the WBCHSE said in a statement. A pass percentage of 89.41 was recorded in this year's Std 10 exams conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. Girls recorded a pass percentage of 91.97 against boys whose pass percentage was 87.27, the board said here. Konkan division delivered the best result with 96 per cent of students passing, while Nagpur division was at the bottom with a pass percentage of 85.97. Board chairman Shakuntala Kale announced the results here. A total of 16,36,250 students had registered for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination held in March, of whom 16,28,613 appeared and 14,56,203 passed.
The Meghalaya Cabinet today approved the proposal for pay revision of over 7,000 teachers of deficit schools and deficit colleges in the state. "The cabinet has decided to extend Fifth Pay Commission benefits to the deficit teachers of Meghalaya with effect from January 1, 2017 which will be effective from next month. The arrears for the teachers will be cleared in four installments," Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who chaired the cabinet meeting, said. Education Minister L Rymbui said Rs 126 crore will be required for clearing the arrears of the teachers and an additional Rs 84 crore is required to implement the revision. He said prior to the pay revision, the government was spending Rs 278 crore per annum and with the pay revision in place, the government will have to spend Rs 362 crore annually. The success of their initiative has led to students from private schools from nearby Srimadhopur town moving to the government school equipped with CCTV cameras and a digital classroom. Pakistan has banned social studies books in private schools in Punjab province for showing Kashmir as a part of India in the map of Pakistan printed on them. The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB), a government body, also lodged a complaint with Lahore police for registration of a criminal case against the administration of the private schools and publishers of the books for committing a 'grave mistake'. All the district executive officers of the province have been directed to confiscate all these books from the warehouse of the private schools. PCTB Managing Director Abdul Qayyum issued a notification yesterday banning the books on social studies in private schools across the Punjab province with immediate effect. The Himachal Pradesh government today decided to do away with semester system in under-graduate courses and revert to annual examination system. We had set up a review committee headed by former vice chancellor to review RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) and it has recommended reverting back to annual examination system," Education Minister Suresh Bharadwaj said. The RUSA was introduced in the state in 2013 and the BJP had assured to restore annual examination system in under graduate course at it was not suitable for hilly state like Himachal Pradesh with difficult topography and demographic variations, he added.
