Govt schools in Delhi have the lowest pass percentage: CBSE

Government schools in Delhi have the lowest pass percentage among all categories of schools affiliated to the CBSE, even as Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia lauded the state-run institutes for an improved performance in the board's Class 10 exam from that in pre-boards. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)declared the Class 10 board exam results today. The overall pass percentage was 86.70, it said. Delhi recorded a pass percentage of 78.62 with girls stealing a march over boys. The pass percentage of girls is 79.15 as opposed to boys who have a pass percentage of 78.12. Government schools had the lowest pass percentage at 69.32. Private schools in the Delhi region had a pass percentage of 89.45 while government-aided institutions had a pass percentage of 69.96. Over 2 lakh MP contractual teachers to be made permanent

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday decided to regularise jobs of over 2 lakh temporary teachers, thus making them eligible for the Seventh Pay Commission's benefits.The decision comes just six months ahead of assembly polls in the state.Announcing this decision, he also launched a scathing attack on previous Congress governments for meting out injustice to them."Today is a historic day. CBSE class 10 results of Delhi schools worst in last 10 yrs: Maken

Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken today claimed that the CBSE class 10 results of Delhi schools was the "worst" in past one decade despite "tall claims" of education reforms by the AAP government. "With only 78.62 percent students passing the exam in Delhi, the result is the worst in the last 10 years. While the national pass percentage stands at 86.70, Delhi's performance falls below it by 8.08 per cent," he said. Form panel to curb defacement of property during DU elections: Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed to constitute a permanent committee at University and College level to implement the guidelines to curb the problem of defacement of public property during Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) Elections.Last year in November, the high court had ordered the Aga Khan Trust to help with the beautification of defaced Metro property that was damaged during the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election campaign in September.The high court also directed the state government to ensure that a 'proper awareness campaign' on the lines of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is created to ensure that people are made aware of the penalties for defacing Delhi Metro property."Delhi is suffering because of defacement", the high court added.The high court again said, "Defacement of property is a violence against the city and also amounts to serving a jail term of ten years"."It's unfortunate you people are taking it as a joke," the high court said to all law ...

HC approves norms framed to prevent property defacement during polls in DU

The Delhi High Court today approved the guidelines framed to prevent defacement of property during polls in Delhi University (DU) and directed all public bodies and authorities to take stringent action, including prosecution, for such activity. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar, however, did not approve one of the guidelines which provided for cancellation of a candidate's nomination if his or her name or photographs are publicised by pasting posters and spraying paint on walls and public property. The bench said this guideline had potential for misuse by opponents of a candidate. President Ram Nath Kovind today said the objective of education should be to nurture freedom of thought and innovation within the students, besides building capacities for a professional career. Upset over poor score, student commits suicide

Upset over not securing good marks in Class 10 board exam conducted by the CBSE, a 17-year-old student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Kakrola here today, the police said. The deceased, Rohit Kumar Meena, was a student of M R Vivekananda Model School in Dwarka. He had secured 59 per cent marks in the exam. No suicide note has been found but it is suspected that he was upset after the results, they added. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. The police were informed around 3.45 pm about the incident. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared the Class 10 board exam results today.

Bharti Foundation inks pact to support govt schools in NE

Bharti Foundation today said it has joined hands with the Meghalaya government to support 50 state-run schools. The Bharti Foundation also signed an MoU with the Assam government to support 45 government-run schools. "Bharti Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises, announced the launch of Satya Bharti Quality Support Programme to support 50 government schools in East and West Jaintia Hills, reaching out to 6,500 children and 136 teachers," the organisation said in a statement. Education minister finds poor quality food served to students

Punjab Education minister O P Soni today made a surprise visit to a government senior secondary residential school for meritorious students here and found the quality of food being served to students not up to the mark. Soni chided the school kitchen in-charge for preparing "poor" quality food for students. The minister ordered the DEO and school principal to constitute a committee of students who shall report directly to him about the quality and quantity of food. Soni passed instructions to the concerned officials to terminate the contract of the caterer without any warning if the committee reported any deficiency in food. Upon complaint by students, the minister ordered the change of dinner time to 8 pm from 7 pm and ordered the warden to ensure that all the students were properly fed.

St Xavier's college to introduce mobile app for attendance

A mobile application for attendance monitoring of students was being introduced by the St Xavier's College from the next academic session. The app will also facilitate sharing study contents. The application will help in recording attendance of students by teachers through tabs provided by college and the authorities were aiming to fully introduce it in the next academic session, college Principal Dominic Savio told a press meet here. He said the mobile apps will also help in sending notifications to students in a particular room or multiple rooms and the process was already underway to give tabs to the teachers. No lugging books to school,no homework for Class I&II pupils: Court

Children are neither weightlifters nor school bags loaded containers, the Madras High Court said today, as it asked the Centre to instruct state governments to reduce weight of satchels of school children and do away with homework for classes I and II. In its interim order, the court also said use of National Council for Educational Research and Training books be made mandatory. The state governments were asked to ensure that weight of the satchels shall not be more than 10 per cent of the weight of the child. It observed that children are neither weightlifters nor school bags loaded containers. Justice N Kirubakaran, while referring to the government orders (GOs) issued by governments of Telangana and Maharashtra, directed the Centre to direct the state governments and governments of Union Territories to formulate a "Children School Bag Policy" reducing the weight of the satchels in line with the guidelines issued by either state. JNU prof cannot take charge as hostel warden, directs Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Atul Kumar Johri, accused of sexually harassing women students, not to take charge as warden of any girls hostel.The high court also asked the fact-finding committee, formed to probe the matter, to decide on his suspension.The next hearing on the matter will be held on August 17.The high court, on April 25, issued notices and sought a reply from the authorities, Delhi Police, and Johri on a plea filed by female students seeking Johri's suspension and a declaration that he should not be allowed to enter the university campus.In March, Delhi's Patiala House Court granted bail to Johri. He was released on bail hours after he was arrested by the police.At least nine women had filed FIRs against the professor from the School of Life Sciences, accusing him of sexual harassment.

Women school teachers in Odisha to wear handloom sarees

In a bid to promote use of handlooms products and support weavers, Odisha government has decided to make it mandatory for women school teachers to wear sarees made by state handloom cooperative, Boyanika, a state minister said today. "Women teachers of both high school and upper primary schools will now wear Boyanika sarees from this academic session," said Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Minister, Snehangini Chhuria. She said the colour of their uniform will not change, but the materials of the saree. The minister said this after a meeting attended by the ministers of Higher Education and School and Mass Education department. University of Hyderabad, also known as Hyderabad Central University, will mentor the Central University of Andhra Pradesh which is proposed to be set up in Jantharalu village of Anantpur district. "The Ministry of Human Resource Development has communicated the setting up of a Central University of Andhra Pradesh and has also decided that the University of Hyderabad will mentor the activities of the proposed university till the amendment to the Central Universities Act of 2009 is effected," a press release said here today.
