In a press conference, Delhi University Forum for Social Justice Convener Suraj Mandal said, "There is an atmosphere of hatred in the country and the Modi government has stopped all the means of employment, pushing the youth towards the path of religious frenzy and caste prejudice. Australia-based Monash College and TimesPro today inked a pact to launch a programme for students planning to pursue undergraduate studies. TimesPro, part of Times Professional Learning (TPL), offers courses in various sectors, including banking, management and analytics. Under the new programme, students would study for eight months in India and rest of the course can be pursued at Monash University in Australia or Malaysia. Chinese Consul General in Kolkata Ma Zhanwu today said the number of Indians studying in China and vice-versa still remained smaller as compared to students from other countries on study trip to China, and called for a rise in the numbers. Zhanwu was addressing the Higher Education Expo, organised by the Chinese Consulate in cooperation with the School of Chinese Language here. "Around 5.5 lakh students from China go abroad every year for study. And on the other hand, 4.5 lakh foreign students visit China every year to study in our institutions," he said. In this backdrop, 18,000 Indians study in educational institutions in China while 2,000 Chinese students study in India in a year, Zhanwu said. "So these figures of Indian and Chinese students visiting countries of each other are not enough and we need to work on it. A girl student, who had to remove her innerwear to appear for NEET here on May 6, has filed a police complaint alleging that an external observer had stared at her 'inappropriately.' Based on her complaint, a case was registered under IPC sect 509 (eveteasing by word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and investigations have begun, police said. The student who appeared for the National Eligiblity-cum-Entrance Test conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) at the Lion's school at Koppa here, had to remove her brassieres along with some other girls as it contained metal hook before writing the test. Haryana government has decided to start 31 government colleges for girls from July, said Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma. The minister said this at an event here yesterday, adding that all the 31 colleges, till the time their construction is complete, would function from "vacant buildings of government schools or other organisations" starting July 2018. "Till the construction of college buildings gets completed, these colleges would run in vacant buildings of government schools or other organisations so that girls would not have to travel far places for education," Sharma said. Sharma further said that the government has been making concerted effort to promote education for girls in the state.
At least three Banaras Hindu University students were injured after two groups from the Birla and Lal Bahadur Shastri hostel clashed among each other during which stones and petrol bombs were also hurled, police said. The incident was fallout of a recent attack on a BA second year student, Ashutosh Maurya, who lives in Shastri hostel, by a group of students from the Birla hostel, with whom he had some enmity, they said. The clashes occurred shortly after midnight today, following the police force deployed in the campus was withdrawn, finding that the situation has improved, police said. The students pelted each other with stones and hurled petrol bombs, damaging vehicles and public property near their hostels in the university campus, they said. The police soon reached the campus on receiving information and had to face tough opposition from the students. As many as 450 students of Delhi University's Law Faculty will not be allowed to write exams due to attendance shortage, according to a notice issued by the varsity. The students detained (not allowed to appear in the exam) belongs to the Law Centre 1 and Law Centre 2 (Under the Faculty of Law) studying in various terms, the notice said. On the notice, All India Students Association's Delhi University president Kawalpreet Kaur, who is also a student of Law Faculty, said, "The attendance have been given in an arbitrary manner." "In January and February very few classes took place and only in March classes took place properly. Permanent recruitment happened and many teachers were changing. There was lot of confusion. In a relief for the students who fail to secure admission to MBBS in the first attempt and settle for some other course, the Gujarat government today said such students can get into the MBBS course if they get the required score in the 'second trial' of the NEET. The norms were changed to give a second chance to "bright students" who want to pursue MBBS but fail to do well in their first trial of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said. Several students can not secure admission to the MBBS course in the first trial for various reasons, such as a death in the family or illness at the time of NEET, he said. "As a result, such bright students have to settle for other streams, such as Homoeopathy or Ayurveda," he said. The Madras High Court today dismissed a PIL challenging the appointment of a committee by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to inquire into the alleged attempt by a woman college teacher to lure students to extend sexual favours in return for higher marks. Justices S Govindaraj and G R Swaminathan of the Madurai Bench held that the governor has the powers as the chancellor (of state-run universities) to order such an inquiry. Dismissing a PIL seeking to declare as null and void the order of the governor appointing the committee headed by retired IAS officer R Santhanam, the bench said the court cannot interfere with the powers of the governor.
