Calcutta University today said it will implement the 'choice-based credit system' (CBCS) from the next academic session in affiliated under-graduate colleges. Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee said the CBCS, which had earlier been only introduced in the Commerce stream, will now be rolled out in both the Arts and Science streams. The system enables a student to choose an elective paper from any discipline. With the aim to bring uniformity in self-financed post-graduate courses run by affiliated colleges, the CU will prepare the curriculum, set questions and examine answer sheets of the PG students from the upcoming academic year, the VC said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar today alleging "irregularities" in the conduct of the national medical entrance exam NEET in the state, and said the ministry could consider re-examination at some of the affected centres. Banerjee, citing reports, said there were many examination centres in the state where students were not provided question papers in Bengali on time, while at some others, they were handed photocopies of question papers, bearing the same candidate code of multiple students. Many candidates were given question papers in English and Hindi, she said. "I strongly urge you to take immediate action against persons responsible for such irregularities, and also take suitable measures so that the candidates are not adversely affected, due to non-availability of appropriate question papers. Two students of an engineering college were today arrested for allegedly leaking an Algebra paper of the Savitribai Phule Pune University, officials of the cyber police here said. Police said that Nashik residents Adesh Chopade (21) and Chinmay Atravhalkar (22), studying in the second and fourth year of the Information Technology stream at a local engineering college, were arrested today. The two students are accused of leaking the Algebra paper set for a Second Year Bachelor of Science examination, police said. They were produced before a local court today which remanded them in police custody for three days, the official said. "After an internal inquiry by Pune University officials, a complaint was filed on Sunday by Yogesh Sonar, an official of the University's Nashik centre, against the two students following which they were arrested," the official said. The Gujarat High Court today struck down a state government rule debarring students of deemed universities from applying for admission to medical post-graduation courses under the provision of 50 per cent state quota. The court verdict allows deemed university students to apply for admission in medical courses under the seats reserved for pupils from Gujarat. A division bench of Chief Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice V M Pancholi quashed rule 4(2) of the Gujarat Professional Post-Graduate Medical Educational Courses (Regulation of Admission) Rules, 2018, terming it "illegal and arbitrary". The regulation 4(2) states candidates shall be eligible for applying for admission to professional medical colleges only when they have completed the recognised MBBS or BDS course from a university established under any law of the government of Gujarat. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today announced the constitution of a six-member oversight committee to examine the recommendations of an earlier panel that reviewed the history syllabus, officials said. The committee will also oversee the content of history school books, they said. The move comes in the wake of the Shiromani Akali Dal alleging that a major portion of Sikh and Punjab history had been removed from the Class 12 curriculum. The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) today postponed annual examinations in view of the ongoing protests on the campus even as two youths wanted in connection with the violence in the varsity on May 2 were arrested by the police. There is a "learning crisis" in South Asia where only about half of the primary-aged children are receiving education with minimum standards, the UN's Children's Fund UNICEF warned today.
