Teacher accidentally fires gun in class, students injured

Police say a teacher in California accidentally fired his gun in a classroom, injuring three students. It happened Tuesday at Seaside High School as Dennis Alexander was teaching a gun safety lesson for his administration of justice class. Police say Alexander, who also serves as a reserve police officer, was pointing the gun at the ceiling to make sure it was not loaded when the weapon discharged. Three students were injured by debris, including a 17-year-old whose father told KSBW-TV his son sustained moderate injuries when bullet fragments lodged in his neck. Alexander was placed on administrative leave from his teaching job and he was also placed on administrative leave at the Sand City Police Department.

26,500 students committed suicide in 2014-16: Govt tells RS

Almost 26,500 students committed suicide in the country between 2014 and 2016, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said 9,474 students took their lives in 2016, 8,934 students in 2015 and 8,068 in 2014. In 2016, the highest number of student suicides (1,350) took place in Maharashtra, followed by West Bengal (1,147), Tamil Nadu (981) and Madhya Pradesh (838), Ahir said replying to a written question. Maharashtra witnessed 1,230 such suicides in 2015, and Tamil Nadu, 955. In the same year, 730 students took their lives in Chhattisgarh and 676 in West Bengal, he said.

Did not block access to admin block: JNUSU to HC

The office bearers of the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) have told the Delhi High Court that they have not violated its order on holding protests in the varsity as they did not block access to the administrative block. They also submitted before the high court that its August last year direction to not hold protests within 100 metres of the admin block should not be viewed technically as the spirit of the direction was to prevent obstruction of any access to the building. The submissions were made before Justice V K Rao who is hearing a plea moved by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) seeking contempt action against the JNUSU office bearers for holding protests within 100 metres of the administrative block. Teacher sent on leave after complaints of sexual harassment

The Kalyani University has sent a teacher on forced leave for an indefinite period after a number of female students complained of sexual harassment against him, a top university official said today. The accused, is a teacher of the Department of Folklore, and he was asked to go on forced leave yesterday, the Vice-Chancellor of Kalyani University, Shankar Kumar Ghosh, said. "We received the complaints of sexual harassment against the teacher about two months ago and had initiated an inquiry," the vice-chancellor said. Dean 'manhandled', 'verbally' abused by agitating students: JNU

Students boycott classes for third day in BCKV

The boycott of classes and sit-in demonstration by the students of the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya entered the third day today protesting against the rejection of their committee for organising a social function by the vice-chancellor. The students have formed a committee consisting of 42 students for organising the annual social function, but the VC rejected it, said an agitating student of the university does not have any students' union at Mohanpur in Nadia district. "The VC wants to make a committee consisting of students of his choice and we do not agree with it", he said. Vice-Chancellor Dharani Dhar Patra said," while the Committee for Social will be formed by the university authority, the other demands would be fulfilled soon." Bus carrying high school students crashes in US

A bus carrying Texas high school band students home from Disney World fell into a 50-foot ravine in Alabama on Tuesday, killing the driver and wounding several others.First Class Tours, which owns the bus, identified the deceased driver as one of its employees, Harry Caligone."Harry was a long-time driver for our company and we are deeply saddened for this loss. HC asks UP govt, CBSE to file counter affidavits in PIL over commercialisation of education

The Allahabad High Court today directed the Uttar Pradesh government, the CBSE and a Ghaziabad-based private school to file counter affidavits in a petition alleging commercialisation of education. The court also issued notice to DPS, Ghaziabad, Vasundhara and asked it to file it's counter affidavit in the case. The bench comprising Chief Justice D B Bhosale and Justice Suneet Kumar passed the above order in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Ghaziabad Parents Association through its member Neeraj Bhatnagar. In the petition it was alleged that DPS, Ghaziabad, Vasundhara, in last three years, raised tuition fees each year though the CBSE rules prohibit fees hike each year. It is stated in the petition that Bhatnagar whose daughter is a class 8 student when filed complaint to the CBSE about unnecessary fee hike, she was expelled from the school. Indian-American woman academic awarded in US

Renu Khator, a top Indian-American woman academic, has been awarded by American Council in Education for her role in mentoring professionals. Khator, 62, Chancellor of University of Houston System and President of University of Houston (UH), awarded the 2018 Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award during the opening plenary of American Council in Education's 100th annual meeting. The award is bestowed annually to acknowledge the substantial role of mentors in the success of the council's fellows program participants. Khator, who was born in Uttar Pradesh and educated at the University of Kanpur, is the UH System's first woman chancellor, UH's first foreign-born president, and the first ever Indian immigrant to lead a comprehensive research university in the US. Khator assumed her current post in January 2008. She now oversees a four-university system that serves nearly 71,000 students.

Education quality in MP poor: Babulal Gaur in House

Veteran BJP leader Babual Gaur today embarrassed the Madhya Pradesh government in the Legislative Assembly, saying education is in a shambles in the BJP-ruled state. Gaur, a former chief minister, blamed deployment of teachers for non-educational tasks for the "poor" condition of education. The Delhi High Court today asked the authorities to explain the measures taken by them to create awareness about menstrual hygiene among school students. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar directed the Centre, Delhi government and the local civic bodies to file status reports on the working of the menstrual hygiene scheme for schools, budgetary allocation for Delhi and the manner in which such products are disbursed. It also asked the governments and civic bodies here the status of publicising awareness schemes and their effective implementation in schools. After protests, Raje govt revokes Dress Code in colleges order

Buckling under widespread protests, especially by students, the Vasundhara Raje dispensation in Rajasthan today revoked its recent controversial order on implementing a dress code for government run colleges in the state. The chief minister said the Directorate of College Education had issued the order to introduce uniforms in government colleges based on suggestions by student representatives. It has been brought to my attention that many students are not happy with this decision. I have therefore asked that uniforms be made voluntary rather than compulsory, Raje tweeted. Over 32,000 posts vacant in Assam schools: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Over 32,000 posts, including nearly 28,000 teaching posts, are lying vacant in government schools across Assam, the state Assembly was informed today. Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at present 15,852 teaching posts are lying vacant in middle english and high schools of the state. In the primary schools, the vacancy of regular teachers stands at 12,121, Sarma said in a written reply to a query by Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar. He also said that 999 third grade and 2,113 fourth grade posts are vacant in the middle english and high schools, while 1,189 fourth grade posts are vacant in primary schools. The minister said that steps are being taken to fill the vacancies. Currently, 99,234 teachers are working in primary schools, while 55,094 are teaching in middle english and high schools, Sarma said. Lecturer shot dead in college premises in Haryana's Sonipat distt

An ad hoc lecturer of a college in Kharkhoda in this district was shot dead today allegedly by a student, police said. The deceased, Rajesh Malik, was aged between 35 to 40 years of age, they said. Police said the youth, who was yet to be identified, was believed to be the student of the same college. The reason behind the killing of the lecturer was yet to be ascertained, they added. The youth fired three to four shots at the lecturer with a revolver in the college premises, police officials said adding that one of the bullets hit Malik in the chest. He succumbed to injuries later, they said. The accused fled the spot after firing shots at the lecturer, police said. Investigations were in progress, they said. Notably, a class 12 student had allegedly shot dead his school principal with his father's licensed revolver in Yamunanagar district in January this year.
