Will look into ongoing protests by law college students

The Madras High Court today said it would look into ongoing protests by students of Dr Ambedkhar Law College here against the decision to shift it to Vandalur in nearby Kancheepuram district. Additional Solicitor General G Rajagopalan mentioned about the protests before the first bench, comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose. Students have been protesting for the past one week over shiftinf of the college and have also sought the intervention of the High Court in the matter. The ASG also said the court had ordered shifting of the law college from the existing place in the High Court campus. When questioned by the Chief Justice whether the case is pending adjudication, the ASG said the petition had already been closed. Asked by the Chief Justice what the court can do in the matter, the ASG submitted it can direct the Commissioner of Police to file a report on the protests by the students. Frisking of girls: Parities seek probe, demand action

The Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP today demanded a probe into alleged frisking of girl students at a school run by Pune-based institute, while they had come there to appear for class 12 examinations. "Around 30 girl students from a school had come to take an examination in a school run by MIT in Loni Kalbhor. The girls complained that they were asked to remove their clothes for search in name of preventing cheating," Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe told reporters outside the Legislative Assembly here. "But I am told by the state Education minister Vinod Tawde that there is no such provision allowing frisking of girl students like this," Gorhe claimed. "I am surprised to find out that all the girl students who were frisked by MIT guards belong to a particular school. SSC paper leak protest: Gate of JLN Stadium Metro station opened

In some relief to commuters, Delhi Metro today opened one of the gates of the JLN Stadium station for public after two days of closure in view of a protest by job aspirants at the CGO Complex nearby, officials said. The demonstration is against the alleged paper leak in one of tests held by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) on February 21. "The JLN Stadium station is now open for public, but entry and exit is allowed only from the main gate, i.e., Gate No. 4. Rest of the gates would remain shut till further directions," a senior DMRC official said. The station falls on the Delhi Metro network's busy Violet Line that connects Kashmere Gate to Escorts Mujesar. It was closed around 9 am on Saturday on the advice of Delhi Police. Centre gives nod for CBI inquiry in SSC paper leak

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that the Centre has ordered Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry in the alleged Staff Selection Commission (SSC) paper leak scam.This comes amid protest by scores of SSC aspirants against the alleged paper leak.Rajnath also appealed the students to call off their protest."We have accepted demands of protesting candidates and have given orders for CBI inquiry, the protest should now stop," Rajnath said.Meanwhile, taking to his twitter handle, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that he had a word in the issue with Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who assured him a CBI inquiry in the matter."Spoke to @DrJitendraSingh in Parliament today. Maha board denies strip searching of 2 girls during exams

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education today denied that two minor girl students appearing for class 12 examinations were "strip searched" by two women guards at a school near here to deter copying. The alleged incident, which occurred during the exams held between February 21-28 at the Gurukul School of the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT), had caused an outrage among parents. Following the incident, police had filed a case under various sections of the IPC and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) against the two guards. Citing preliminary inquiry, a Board official said the girls were not "strip-searched" by the guards. "We had formed a two-member team of officials of the Pune division of State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. The team visited the school and recorded the statements of the centre head, school management and the woman staffers," said B K Dahiphale, Secretary of Pune .

IIT-KGP to host youth conclave for budding engineers

IIT Kharagpur is set to host the two-day 'INAE Youth Conclave' from March 23, aiming to engage budding engineers from different disciplines. Students are expected to develop new applications, innovative technologies or devise workable action plans to answer pressing problems in contemporary time at the INAE (Indian National Academy of Engineering) competition, an IIT-KGP statement said. The competition will be held in two phases. 175 student fall ill after eating meal at Chhattisgarh school

A total of 175 students of a government school in Surajpur district fell ill after they consumed food served in the school on Holi.Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) of Chhattisgarh S.P. Vaishy said, "The paneer, which was served in the morning of Holi celebrations, was also served in the evening"."We have given all the food samples to the food safety officer to know the actual cause. Police cane-charge protesting teachers in Jammu

Police today used batons to disperse the protesting Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers here after they tried to take out a rally to press for their demands, including release of pending salaries. A number of SSA teachers gathered at the exhibition ground and tried to take out a rally in support of their demands. However, they were stopped by police and baton-charged after they refused to disperse, officials said. Meanwhile, opposition National Conference condemned the the use of force on SSA teachers and sought a probe into the "brutal act" of police to silence peaceful protesters. "Action against teachers, the pillars of the society, is highly deplorable," National Conference Provincial spokesperson Madan Mantoo said in a statement. Police: Suspect in college campus shooting apprehended

A 19-year-old student suspected of killing his parents at a Central Michigan University dormitory before running from campus was apprehended early today following an intensive day-long search that included more than 100 police officers, some heavily armed in camouflage uniforms, authorities said. James Eric Davis Jr was arrested without incident after an individual spotted him on a train passing through the north end of campus shortly after midnight, according to a release posted on Central Michigan's Emergency Communication website. Students hospitalised for food poisoning after meal at school

At least 125 students complained of food poisoning after having snacks at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Chhattisgarhs Surajpur district, an official said. Students, mostly from classes 9th to 11th, had consumed "dahi wada" yesterday at the school, located in Basdei village, and complained of uneasiness, dysentery, headache and fever, Surajpur Collector KC Devsenapati told PTI today. "Around 10 students had dysentery. About 70 had headache and 45 had fever. A medical team was rushed to the school and 46 students were admitted to the district hospital today morning. Others have been kept under the supervision of a team of six doctors camping at the school," he informed. He said that of the students who were admitted, 20 were discharged after their parents took them home. "The condition of the remaining 26 is also normal and they too will be discharged soon. JNU students union announces referendum on attendance issue

Continuing its agitation against the JNU administration's compulsory education directive, the university's students union has announced that it will hold a 'referendum' on the issue on March 7. "JNUSU appeals to students to vote this time in the referendum on Wednesday March 7," JNUSU president Geeta Kumari said. The election committee that held JNUSU elections last year will be deputing some of its members for holding the referendum. The Delhi Metro today closed the JLN Stadium station for public in the wake of a big protest by students at the nearby CGO Complex, officials said today. The station falls on the Delhi Metro network's busy Violet Line that connects Kashmere Gate to Escorts Mujesar.
