Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has assured that he will issue an appointment order for the post of permanent director for the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology (NERIST).Javadekar spoke with Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Honchung Ngandam over telephone on Friday evening on this issue, even as a students' agitation on the campus entered fifth day on Saturday. Researchers at the University of Tubingen in Germany analysed data of 346,660 high school students in 1960, along with follow-up data from 81,912 of those students 11 years later and 1,952 of them 50 years later. The initial high school phase measured a variety of student behaviours and attitudes as well as personality traits, cognitive abilities, parental socioeconomic status and demographic factors. State minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil culture, K Pandiarajan today said about Rs 39.5 crore has so far been received for setting up the Tamil Chair at the Harvard University in the US. The state government has contributed Rs 10 crore for the chair and World Tamil Research Centre Rs 2.6 crore, while as many as 9,800 persons from 26 countries, have contributed for the purpose, he told reporters here. Harvard University has informed that it has received 5.6 million USD (Rs 36 crore) for the chair till February-end, he said adding a detailed report in this regard will be given by the Chief Minister himself.
A 13-year-old-boy has allegedly committed suicide by hanging in his house near Tirupur after being reportedly harassed by some teachers and students, police said today. The boy returned home last evening from school and shut himself in a room. Since the boy did not open the door for long, his parents and neighbours broke open the door, only to find his body hanging from the ceiling by a rope, police said. Police recovered a letter purportedly written by the boy, which stated that two teachers had complained about him to his parents over phone leading him to take his life. The letter also said some classmates were teasing him, police said. Even as police began an inquiry, parents and relatives staged a demonstration seeking action against the teachers.

Several people have been found dead inside a home in Massachusetts including at least two elementary school students. Police say the bodies were found yesterday at a home in West Brookfield, about 105 kilometres west of Boston. It was not immediately clear exactly how many people were found dead or how they died. Police today seized 216 kg of ganja and arrested four persons in this connection here. Police said the four, hailing from Andipatti in Theni district, were travelling in a van. On searching the vehicle, police found 108 packets each containing two kg of ganja. The four were planning to sell it to college students and labourers in and around the city, police said. Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde today said that schools not following the provisions of the Right to Education Act could lose their registration. He was responding to a calling attention motion raised in the Assembly by the Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and other legislators. Vikhe Patil alleged that several schools were violating the RTE Act by not admitting students from the economically weaker sections of society. "If a school does not admit a student, then it will lose its registration. Under any circumstance, a school cannot deny admission to a needy stduent," Tawde said. Vikhe Patil also wanted to know if schools, which were following the RTE Act, had been given mandatory funds by the state government.
