Appointment of director of NERIST got delayed due to various

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju today said the appointment of a regular director of North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) near here got delayed due to various reasons. The Minister of State for Home expressed concern over the protest launched by the students union of NERIST demanding immediate posting of a regular director in the deemed university. "During my last visit to NERIST, the ministry had informed me that the new director could be appointed by December 2017. On that basis I had assured the students," Rijiju said. "The matter (appointment) got stuck in the search-cum-selection committee for various reasons, including the cumbersome process as per laid down rules and regulations," he said and added that nothing could justify the delay of many months. Govt unveils 24 hr toll free helpline to provide info on edu

Tamil Nadu Government today said a 24-hour helpline has been set up for the first time in the country that would provide information on education and offer guidance to students. Chief Minister K Palaniswami formally launched the toll free number 14417 through the 24 hour Education Guidance Centre set up at the Secretariat that would offer information relating to school education and offer guidance to students. Following the announcement in the Assembly that a toll free help line would be set up at Rs two crore, Palaniswami launched the facility at a function, an official release said. School Education Minister K A Sengottaiyan, Chief Secretary, Girija Vaidyanathan and senior government officials participated in the function, the release said.

No adequate policing to prevent women harassment during Holi: Students

In the wake of incidents of harassment of girl students ahead of Holi, a group of students and professors of Jesus Mary College today staged a demonstration near Delhi Police Headquarters alleging "lack of" comprehensive measures by the force. "In many parts of Delhi, the occasion of Holi has been misused to physically assault women and young girls with semen-filled balloons. We are approaching you with a strong appeal for adequate policing and patrolling and for more pro-active measures because we strongly feel these are lacking," a memorandum submitted to the Police Commissioner said. Singapore GIIS to set up 5 SMART campuses in India

A Singapore-based international school plans to invest Rs 150 crore to set up five new campuses in India, according to a top official. The Indian-curriculum-based Global Indian International School (GIIS), which expanded its operation from Singapore through Asia over the past 16 years, will make an investment of Rs 50 crore investment in a new campus in Amaravati of Andhra Pradesh. "We are ramping up GIIS presence in India in main metros to enhance the availability of digitally-led school education," Rajeev Katyal, Deputy Deputy Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Country Director said. GIIS is also planning its SMART campuses in Bangalore, Pune, Nagpur and Mumbai. "Technology driven education introduces robotics, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Management), touch screen and virtual classrooms in school environments," said Katyal. GIIS India operates nine campuses in eight Indian cities and 23 campuses in seven countries in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

HC to hear plea against DoE order to shut down 7 schools

The Delhi High Court has sought the response of the Centre and the AAP government on a plea seeking to quash an order of the state's education department, alleging an attempt to shut down seven neighbourhood schools in central district that are running successfully in the garb of 'merger and re-structure'. Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Department of Education (DoE), Delhi government and the Centre and fixed the matter for further hearing on July 27. However during the course of the hearing, the Delhi government counsel told the court that they have withdrawn certain parts of the concerned order. The plea, filed a lawyer-activist Yusuf Naqi, said that as per a reply obtained through Right to Information, the reason behind such closure or merger of schools given was due to less enrolment of students . Army organises capacity-building tour for Rajouri youth

Police: Georgia teacher fires gun in classroom; no one

A social studies teacher barricaded himself inside a classroom at a Georgia high school and fired a handgun once in what may have been a warning shot, authorities said. No students were in the classroom at the time, and the only injury reported was a student who hurt her ankle running when Dalton High School was evacuated. The teacher, Jesse Randal Davidson, was taken into custody without incident after a 30- to 45-minute standoff with officers, Dalton police spokesman Bruce Frazier said. Davidson, 53, serves as the play-by-play announcer for the high school's football team, police said in a tweet. Police didn't immediately say why Davidson fired the gun, but noted that he aimed away from anyone into an exterior window as the principal tried to unlock the classroom door. LSR students allege balloon-flinging, cops intervene

Students of Delhi University's Lady Shree Ram College for Women today alleged a series of balloon-flinging incidents, including one in the evening in which three balloons were thrown from a house located in the I block of Amar Colony. A BA history student of the college also alleged "semen-flinging" in the morning at the Old Double Storey area near Amar Colony. Based on a complaint received from the students, the police were looking into the issue, an official attached to the Amar Colony police station said. "One of our friends was hit by three balloons at around 8 pm. She called us for help. We told the police about the house from which the balloons were thrown and demanded immediate action," a student, who requested not to be named, told PTI. After the police intervened, the residents of the house, from where the balloons were thrown, issued a written apology that said, "An incident of ballooning happened from the roof of our two-storied quarters in the absence of any men at home. ..

SCB medicos call off stir after teacher's transfer

The junior doctors of SCB Medical College and Hospital here called off their 10-day-long strike today after the state transferred a senior teacher of the college's Urology department, college officials said. The students had alleged that the senior professor used to harass them, and therefore they went on strike, demanding his removal from the college, they said. "Upon the government's acceptance of our long-standing demand to transfer the teacher, Datteswar Hota, from here, we decided to call off the strike and resumed our duties from this evening," the General Secretary of the Junior Doctors' Association (JDA), Phanindra Kumar Swain, said. He said other doctors, who had stayed away from work in support of our demand, have also resumed their duties. The state government had yesterday transferred Hota to MKCG Medical College in Berhampur from here, a college official said.

Teacher in custody after 'shots fired' report at US school

Police in the southeastern US state of Georgia on Wednesday confirmed that a teacher was taken into custody, who was barricaded in a classroom after the reports of shots fired at Dalton High School.Police in Dalton, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of Atlanta, tweeted that no children were hurt or were in danger.The incident prompted the officials to evacuate and lock down the school.Several media reports stated that the Dalton Police and Georgia State Patrol responded to the scene.However, it is yet not known as to what caused the incident.More details are awaited.

NDMC's executive wing proposed transfer of hospitals to Centre

The executive wing of the cash-strapped North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) had proposed handing over its hospitals and medical college to the Centre, officials said. The proposal came up before the standing committee of the BJP-led corporation today, but the item was "postponed", an official said. NDMC has five major hospitals under its jurisdiction and a medical college, since the trifurcation of then unified MCD in 2012. Some of the major hospitals under NDMC are Hindu Rao Hospital attached with a college, and Kasturba Hospital.

Students in emotional return to Florida high school

With tears, fears and defiance, students made an emotional return today to their Florida high school where a former classmate went on a shooting rampage two weeks ago, killing 17 people. Students at Marjory Douglas Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida, were greeted by heavy security and scores of well-wishers as they returned to classes. Calcutta HC relief for 218 undergraduate students

The Calcutta High Court today gave permission to 218 students of a girls college to sit for their examination which had been refused by the Calcutta University on the ground that the institution had exceeded its intake capacity at the time of enrolment. The fate of the undergraduate students had been hanging in the balance following the university's decision to refuse their registration over its claim that the college had admitted 10 students in excess of its intake capacity in five honours subjects. In an interim order, Justice Arindam Sinha directed CU to complete registration process of all the 218 students and allow them to sit for the Part-I Honours subjects which they have studied for. The Part-I examination of the university is scheduled to commence from March 6. TISS students' strike in four campuses enters 8th day

Students on strike across four campuses of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) have refused to call it off even after the institute's administration allowed them to use college facilities despite the pendency of dues. A section of students have been on strike since February 21 after the TISS administration asked many of them, who have been chosen for government scholarships but are yet to get the money, to clear their dues related to tuitions, dining and hostel fees. Issuing a statement, TISS said, "Students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), who are yet to receive their Government of India Post Matric Scholarship, can continue with their respective courses, stay in TISS hostels and use the dining facilities, despite their dues on account of these charges to the institute." Exam records held in fiduciary capacity: DU to HC

The Delhi University (DU) today submitted before the Delhi High Court that the varsity's BA exam records of all its students of 1978 is held in a fiduciary capacity and cannot be disclosed under RTI. The submission has been made by the DU in an affidavit which the court has not taken on record as it had earlier closed the varsity's right to file further replies in the matter. The affidavit was filed by the varsity in its plea challenging a Central Information Commission (CIC) direction to allow inspection of the university's records of all students who had passed BA examination in 1978. The CIC had directed the DU to allow inspection of records related to all the students who had passed BA degree in 1978, the year in which, according to the University, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also cleared the examination.
