The state government today raised the upper limit for fees for higher secondary students in the science stream in private schools to Rs 30,000 per year from the earlier cap of Rs 27,000. The cut-off was revised by the state government after the Supreme Court, in its interim order earlier this month, directed it to do so after hearing representations from the schools and parents' associations. "Considering that schools have to spend on laboratories for its science stream, like purchase of chemicals and appointment of laboratory assistants, we have decided to raise the cut-off for higher secondary (science) to Rs 30,000 from Rs 27,000 presently," state education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has ordered the education department to look into complaints against private schools withholding admit cards of students for board exams. In an official order, he said, "Private schools can increase fees only after verification of accounts is complete. But some schools are charging excess fees as well as arrears from parents. Some schools are also using threat of non-issuance of admit cards to force parents to pay hiked fees." "I have received complaints from several distraught parents about this harassment from schools. The education department should ensure that all children receive their admit cards without delay and an action-taken report is sent to me," Sisodia said. The Delhi High Court today put on hold the operation of a CBSE notification laying down eligibility conditions, including the upper age limit of 25 and 30 years for general and reserved categories respectively, to apply for MBBS course. The order was passed by a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Chander Shekhar on several petitions moved by medical aspirants who are aggrieved by various other eligibility norms which bar them from applying for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-UG for which the last date for submission of application is March 9. The Delhi government has decided to set up its State Sanskrit Education Council to improve the state of formal education of the language in the national capital. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has directed the education department to examine various representations received by the Delhi government pertaining to Sanskrit education in schools and colleges. "Formal education of Sanskrit language in Delhi is a mess. I keep receiving representations from various people on issues pertaining to Sanskrit education in schools, colleges and universities. The main reason behind this is that Delhi does not have a Sanskrit Education Council," he said in an official order. "The department may examine the representations and do the needful to set up a Delhi State Sanskrit Education Council. A detailed step-by-step programme about actions to be taken should be submitted to me as soon as possible," Sisodia said.

The Punjab government has constituted an advisory group of eminent academicians to work on a roadmap for reforms in higher education sector, an official said today. The advisory group will provide inputs and give recommendations on various issues related to higher education sector in the state, a spokesperson of the chief minister's office said. It has been mandated to propose a viable framework for regulation of public and private universities in the state, and has asked to submit its interim report by June 30 and final report by September 30, 2018, said the spokesperson Sociologist Prof Dipankar Gupta, Ashoka University Vice Chancellor Pratap Bhanu Mehta, former vice-chancellor of Central University of Punjab Jai Rup Singh and former officiating chairman of University Grants Commission V S Chauhan are members of the group, the spokesperson said. West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee today urged the opposition to come together and help the government to curb "isolated incidents" in colleges and universities of the state. Chatterjee, however, criticized the opposition for trying to malign the government on each and every issue regarding the education system of the state instead of helping the government tackle the situation. "Certain incidents have taken place inside university and college campus. These are isolated incidents, we don't want such incidents to happen. The opposition parties instead of criticizing us should come together in curbing such incidents," he said. In a major relief to students of class 10 who will write their board exams next week, the Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) has decided to grant a one-time relaxation in passing marks. The board has decided to implement overall 33 per cent pass mark criteria for this batch of students only they would not need to secure 33 per cent separately in board exams and internal assessments. "The examination committee of the board in its meeting held on February 16 after considering the circumstances and the facts that the current batch of class X (2018) is coming from a different assessment background while they were in class IX (in 2017) resolved to approve the following for this batch as a one-time measure," an official notification said. According to the new relaxation, in order to pass, a student has to secure a total of 33 per cent (internal assessment and theory marks combined). The Madras High Court today granted exemption to students studying in linguistic minority institutions from taking compulsory Tamil examination in this year's board exams too. The matter relates to making Tamil language paper compulsory which was challenged by various linguistic minority schools including Linguistic Minorities' Forum of Tamil Nadu. The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose, while referring the matter to a larger bench, passed the interim order today while dealing with a batch of petitions. Last year, the court had directed the School Education Department to continue the exemption granted to all class 10 students having mother tongue other than Tamil from writing Part I Tamil language during the board exam.
