The government has increased the number of cities where the NEET examination would be conducted this year, from 107 to 150, to make it easier for the students to reach the venues, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said today. "Forty-three new centres granted for #NEET2018 exam. For the first time NEET exam would be conducted in 150 cities. In 2017 NEET exam was conducted in 107 cities," he tweeted. "All the cities from where 4,000 and more candidates have applied and which were not the centres in 2017 have been added as centre cities for #NEET2018 exam," the minister said. New centres have been set up in Andhra Pradesh (5), Assam (2), Gujarat (3), Maharashtra (6), Odisha (4), Tamil Nadu (2), Kerala (5), Telangana (2), West Bengal (3), Uttar Pradesh (3) and one new centre each in Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Karnataka and Uttarakhand. The Delhi High Court today said that construction of schools under the Right to Education (RTE) would prevail over building parking or commercial complexes. Directing maintenance of status quo on 2,400 square metre of land allotted for public utilities in the national capital, the high court asked the authorities to consider if the piece of land could be given to build a minority school, which has been functioning from tents after it was demolished during the Emergency over four decades ago. Observing that children needed schools to get education, a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said the piece of land, which the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has allotted for making parking and commercial complex, would not be used for the purpose till further orders. The Delhi High Court today quashed a CBSE circular and allowed the sale of non-NCERT books and uniforms at the tuck shops set up at affiliated schools across the country, holding that the sale of such items does not amount to "commercialisation" of education. It said the availability of books, both NCERT and non NCERT, stationery items and uniform in the school premises would only add to the convenience of the parents and the students. "We are soon setting up India corners in educational institutes abroad. We are in the process of identifying libraries in the institutes abroad where this can be set up. The government is going to reduce the syllabus of NCERT textbooks in the coming two to three years, Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar announced on Monday.
The HRD Ministry has decided to seek suggestions from various stakeholders on which portions of the NCERT curriculum can be done away with to reduce the burden on students as the current syllabus was only making them examination driven, minister Prakash Javadekar said today. The reduction of syllabus to up to half will be done in the next two to three years and the curriculum will be revamped to include physical education, value education and life skills education, the Union Human Resource Development Minister said here.
