The Haryana government would give bicycles free of cost to students belonging to scheduled castes category who live more than two kilometers away from their schools. The students should be studying in classes six, nine or 11th in government schools. A proposal to this effect has been approved by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said here today. "Such students can purchase bicycle of his or her choice and submit its bill in their school. The amount will later be credited into bank account of the student concerned under Direct Benefits Transfer scheme," said Sharma. Sharma said that the students would be provided 20 or 22-inch bicycles according to their requirement. "The School Education Department will give Rs 2,525 for 20-inch cycle and Rs 2,775 for 22-inch cycle. Responsibility of school head and School Management Committee has been fixed to provide cycle to each such student," he said.
The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra government to inspect at least 10 school buses of different private schools in the city to confirm their compliance with prescribed safety rules. The court also directed the state's education department to ensure that all registered school buses and private vehicles ferrying schoolchildren had valid permits and adhered to the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles (Regulations for School Buses) Rules 2011. A bench was hearing a petition filed by an association of parents of schoolchildren seeking that private vehicles which do not meet safety guidelines be disallowed from plying as school buses. A petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to authorities not to consider the 11th standard marks for college admissions. When it came up, the court directed the Secretary, state school education department, to take a decision after consulting academicians and others on a representation not to consider the 11th standard marks for college admissions. A fire destroyed more than two dozen school buses overnight and forced a Pennsylvania district to cancel classes today. The fast-moving blaze at a Parkland School district garage in South Whitehall, near Allentown, was reported around 3 a.m. People who live near the site reported hearing explosions around that time, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) today denied it has withdrawn all forms of financial aid to students belonging to SC, ST and OBC communities, saying it continues to follow central government guidelines on scholarships. Significantly, TISS Students Union is on strike alleging that the administration has withdrawn financial aid provided to students from these categories, who are otherwise exempted from paying the tuition fee, the dining hall charge and the hostel fee. "The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) categorically denies having stopped any scholarships for its students, and is continuing to follow all government guidelines on student welfare," the Institute said in a release here. The traffic police has issued an advisory for plying of school buses in Jammu and Kashmir, asking them to strictly follow the stipulated guidelines. As per the advisory, school buses need to be painted yellow, with "on school duty" written on the back and the front of the bus in clearly visible fonts. The advisory, released by Inspector General of Police (Traffic) Basant Rath, further said buses should have first aid kits, speed governors of specified standard, window grills and fire extinguishers. School names and telephone numbers must be written on the buses, the doors fitted with good quality locks and a space fitted under the seats to keep school bags, the advisory said.
